Every so often, our toilet starts to refill a little on its own, and then stops after a few seconds. I've noticed that the water level in the tank was gradually decreasing, but then seemed to be steady at about 1 inch below the level mark. Now it's doing this more often, and the level seems to be going down further. The apparatus in the tank looks newish and I can't seem to find a way to adjust the height of the ball so that the water will run a little longer and fill the tank up more.

This seems like a really easy thing to fix, but I've already put my hands in that freezing tank water many times and haven't gotten very far.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Probably the flapper valve at the bottom of the tank is leaking. This is the valve that is lifted when you use the handle to flush.

Replacements are inexpensive and easy to replace, other than the cold hands. There are two little ears they hook onto at the bottom of the fill tube.

If the toilet flushes correctly, I wouldn't worry about adjusting the float height.

I agree with bobkat. Buy a rebuild kit (cheap) and easy to do.

Most of the time the tank flap is the problem, just like Bobkat said.
If changing or adjusting it doesn't help, post back and we'll have siphon class.

Thanks for the advice!
Wouldn't you know, since I posted this message, the problem seems to have gone away. Maybe when I fiddled with it, something changed. I'm sure it's temporary, but I'm going to wait until the problem comes back before trying the tank flap replacement. I'll post again if I can't figure out the replacement procedure.
Thanks again.
