We have huge bulges on the plaster walls. We've done spot repairs over the years, but it is time to bit the bullet and have at least 2 rooms stripped of plaster and sheetrocked.

Apparently, in some old homes (about 70 years), the top layer of plaster starts pulling away from the underneath layer.

Anyone else had this problem? If so, any referrals?

Thanks in advance.

Usually what happens is that the plaster that runs through the lath, called keys, break and allow the plaster to pull off the wall.

If the problem isn't to extensive the plaster can be pulled back to the lath using plaster washers and joint compound.

If you are going to redo the rooms I would suggest using one of the interior painting companies often mentioned here. The added advantage is that they can also do the painting! Most of them also remove plaster and install sheetrock.

Ditto to Bob K!

I just had this done to my plastered ceiling that partially collapsed. I had a local painting company come in and remove the plastered ceiling. They installed sheetrock, put in new crown molding (removed the old one) and I had the whole room painted. They also repaired the cracks on some of the walls. The room looks great!

Using painting companies is a good alternative than a contractor who may be busy.

I used Sergios, but here are other companies who were recommended on another thread:

World of Colors
Pintona CM
Arthur & Arthur

Good-Luck!

We appreciate it.
