Having recently moved here from NYC, we are still very new at certain things and have a question or two about the etiquette of snow removal. When you are shoveling, is it ok to shovel your snow onto your neighbors' property? It seems mostly unavoidable since on our street many driveways are right up against the neighbors' yard.

Also, the house behind us, which is separated by a rather flimsy 4' fence, has a large parking area. They shoveled a very large pile of snow over the fence into our yard and actually bent the fence in doing so. Truthfully, the fence is plastic and not worth much, but it is now damaged nonetheless.

Is there a right and wrong here? Thanks.

Ah, I have revived the Suburban Ethisist from his/her long winter hibernation and have learned the following:

 1. When shoveling or snow blowing it is almost impossible to avoid getting some snow on a neighbors property. However, it is extremely bad manners to distribute your snow in an area of the neighbors property where they are going to have to shovel it.

 2. The first question is who owns the fence? You or your neighbor? Much like in the above case destroying someone elses property is verbotten. If it is your fence you have every right to discuss compensation with the neighbor.

 Might I add:
 3. You should not pile any snow on plants, shrubs or bushes the weight of which may damage said plants.

Morrisa, the Ethisist thanks you and the only possible excuse for not mentioning this was not being awake yet.

In the Good Neighbor column should be clearing your neighbor's walk. Several times since we've moved here (2yrs) our neighbors have cleared our walk for us. We now have a snow blower and I will clear their walk for them while I'm doing ours. This means I am clearing 4 houses worth of sidewalk (the houses are close to each other). I do it to be a good neighbor, they do to be a good neighbor, everyone wins!

 Here's a good one.
I plowed (3) of my neighbors driveways for (2) years @ no charge and not once got a "thanks" from one of them. Guess what? Now I wave while they grasp their chest humping the snow themselves.

Some people just have NO CLUE! How could they not say Thank You?

I'd be making you dinner! Buying you wine! Walking your dog! Kissing your feet?

How about some nice, homebaked banana bread? FREE to anyone who comes over and plows my walk/path/driveway/whatever!
