Did anyone see the article in News-Record about the TC's consideration of new ways to structure waste pick-up in Maplewood? Article explained that TC was considering rolling waste pick-up bill into taxes or making residents purchase specific bags for pick-up (like Chatham's system where you pay based on how many bags you fill up). The TC's goal is to lower costs for taxpayers, blah, blah, blah. The part that really bothered me was that the reporter said that homeowners currently contract directly with private haulers and that most use Waste Management, implying that we have a choice of haulers and that we control the relationship with the hauler. What a load of ****. Homeowners are required by law to have trash service and our only choice is Waste Managment because the Town government gives them a monopoly on servicing Maplewood. One way to lower costs may be to actually allow some competition in town. |

I don't think she is. Presuming anyone would quote the business against Waste Management (not really likely in the waste industry) having two or three sets of trucks rumbling up and down each street in town would be rather much. And how about recycling? Would there be multiple companies picking up there as well. |

If the town does give WM a monopoly, why not cut out the middle man? Surely WM would save money on billing and uncollected debts if they contracted directly with the town. We'd all save, even if the charge remained the same. |
