There's been too much unanimity on the township committee Jerry. I think you should vote against this Bike Tour banner thing. Larry Seltzer Citizen |

If you are asking what the GR/BL means: the clerk generally codes who is going to move and second an ordinance by the initials of the members of the Township Committee... so this would be an ordinance I would move and Burt Leibman would second. The mover is generally the person who initially suggested the ordinance, or the chair of the TC standing committee that the ordinance belongs with (both in this case :-), and the seconder is another member of that committee. If you are asking, what is the ordinance, it's an ordinance to create handicapped parking spaces in three lots in town where they need to be created. |

Question, where in the posted Agenda for the Township of Maplewood, June 18, 2002, did it list that a discussion and motion to stop the business of the B&B would be held? I’ll read it again, but had I known it was going to become a motion to halt the business, I would have come down to address the Town Council.

Hi Ron! Hold on to your boots. I agree with your answer! #9 and 10b. I do not know your position on the B&B, but as I was watching that as it developed I was looking for my shoes and keys to rush down to address the Council. My wife was correct, and it was all over before I could have gotten there safely. I think Art is a victim of a campaign, and the campaign has found a way to drag lawyers into this and now it is a legal thing. The Town Council has to be on the side of the law. So they are.

Is it true that the anti-BnB attorney is a Democratic District leader? Isn't there a conflict there, if it's true? |

On my Birthday and this Father's Day, my daughter Erin asked me how I was doing with my neighbors. I told her I hoped that someday we can get back to the way it use to be. I said there seems to be a lot of hate in this world....too much! Her answer was one we had all heard recently somewhere, and I believe it went like this: *** Until they love their children more than they hate their neighbor's, it will never end.*** I say give it more time, and lets hope it will all work out! |

Jgberkeley, And you hold onto your own boots: I agree with Vic on this one! I truly feel Maplewood would thrive as a destination spot for people from all over the world if it had a variety of well run and "good neighbor" bed and breakfasts. Given our nearness to NYC and how close we are to so many corporate headquarters, (I've heard that one big trend, given the constraints on corporate travel, is a desire by corporate travelers to stay in B&Bs instead of hotels. I would expect that many corporate travel functions will soon require it as a cost saver.) this has all the elements of solid, economic growth written on it! Art and any other owner needs to have a supportive and yet strong town ordinance that clearly covers hours, outside parties, etc. What he needs is to not have to be going after other forms of business and have a strong, constant flow of B&B guests who are there for what most B&B guests want: The same peace and quiet his neighbors or my neighbors or your neighbors want. The other part of that "better picture" in my mind is a "restaurant row of foods of the world" along Springfield. Now that we've not checkmated the efforts of the restauranteurs who are currently trying, let's get them some solid competition that grows the traffic and turnover for even more and grows our ratables as well! Given our goals around a diverse community that to me links a lot of needs and opportunities. By the way, it's OK with me if the Village wants in on the "foods of the world thing." I don't mind 'cause it's "one town." Best Regards, Ron Carter |

Ed May, Very well said, something I have been saying for years about the benefits of B&B’s in our community. If we spent 1% of the time on B&B’s, that the TC and the Springfield Avenue Partnership has spent on SA over the past ten years, we would now be generating between six to ten million a year into our local economy. This is in addition to the increase in property values, and the development of every available piece of commercial property in town. Yes, SA too! Lets also talk about game playing, vs. playing it straight! It appears Jerry and I enjoy talking about facts; well here are some more facts. A year and a half ago, I personally gave Vic and Burt and the rest of the EDC committee detailed reports on the value of expanding the bed and breakfast industry in Maplewood. At that time I chaired the B&B Study Committee for the EDC. On occasion Jerry also had attended these meetings. Did they demonstrate any interest then about the development of the B&B business in Maplewood, NO! Did they offer to, as Vic has stated, “Broker Meetings for eight months” with me, about my neighbor problems? No! In the beginning of all this, I didn't even knew there was a problem brewing until after members of the TC and my neighbors had already had meetings about it. They even went so far as putting in place a plan on how to raid my property, chase away my guests, and issue summons to me. In Maplewood, I like to think we’re all kind of neighbors to one and other. I also believe most people would agree that our neighbors in Maplewood are generous, openly friendly, helpful, courteous, and gentle people. They volunteer often, and they involve themselves in community activities. They don't hate, they love. They don't look for fights; they look for ways to solve the problems. Good neighbors negotiate, not instigate problems. In the face of any problems we might face, I still believe we have the best community in the state. Conversely, I have come to learn that we also have an increasing number of petty problems, often over minor issues. Unless, someone in authority puts a concerted effort forth, these little problems become big ones. (I mean getting both sides together around the table.) When neighbors have problems we should treat them like family problems. Would you sit down with just one son against another? I hope not! The system in town to deal with complaints is all wrong!!!! To begin with it’s covert. Complaints come in and the code enforcement officers, and/or the police department immediately investigate them. Mostly no effort is made to contact the other side to mediate a quick and fair solution. Yes, the police may come to someone’s door, or there might even be a warning issued, but no real effort to get to the bottom of the problem. There needs to be a sense of fairness demonstrated for both sides of a complaint. There are always two sides… a simple form to fill out requesting mediation would be all that is needed. If I ever serve on the TC, the first thing I would do is form a special committee of trained volunteers, (mediators) for the purpose of working things out like; all neighbor complaints, creating a disturbance, noise complaints, littering, loitering, harassment, parking, trespassing, theft of services, simple assault, disorderly conduct, bad checks, the list is endless. I have previously checked with other communities who had great success with similar programs. What is wrong with our TC that they don’t offer us some relief in this very important area of fostering cooperation between our neighbors? The truth is why wait, I think I’ll just do it myself… I already have all the details worked out in writing from other communities… Would anyone on MOL want to serve with me on the “Maplewood Community Mediation Committee?” I would like six men, and six women with experience in assisting parties to resolve contested issues, and who have, or are willing to receive training as a mediator. If interested, please e-mail me at LesSaisons@comcast.net, or call me at 973-762-8518.
