Hi everyone - I live on Pierson Road in the Golf Island section of Maplewood. When we moved here, it was a beautiful dead-end block and lined with thriving trees that have probably been there for at least 100 years. For the past 3 weeks, the DPW and now PSE&G are chopping down our trees with no thought or care! They say they are doing it because the branches might fall on the powerlines. One of the reasons we loved this block was you couldn't see the powerlines and trees lined the streets creating a lovely canopy. Now in a matter of weeks, they're gone. I am so angry! They're ruining our block - killing a lot of the reasons why we moved here in the first place. The people they send out here to remove the trees don't know anything about what they're doing. They chop it down until there's just a stump left with no possibility of re-growth. I am disgusted there seems to be such a lack of concern for the trees of our neighborhood. Are they chopping down trees anywhere else??? What can we do??? The name our town is Maplewood for goodness sake!! |

...FWIW, the padded tree along side the ball field in Maplecrest Park was saved, and I suspect the group who saved it can be located at town hall. Try some members of the TC for more info. Good luck. |

you are lame, dude. suzette, i hear you. i live near you and i saw the guys doing their "work" at pierson or sommer and valley. you're right, they don't give a crap how they prune or strategically cut. last spring, they chopped half of a small tree in front of my house for no good reason. the tree is now lopsided and ugly and didn't have to be. my next door neighbor told me he watched them do this and then when the guy saw what he actually had done, he said "sh*t" to his coworker and they both laughed and drove off. wish i could tell you something good. don't bank on the libertarian for that either. ever. |

Thanks - I know I sound like a crazy tree hugger but it is disenheartening to see your block change for the worst and it seems like you can't do anything about it. The contractors that PSE&G hired are from Texas and they could care less about Maplewood. They are also permitted to come on your property and hack away at your trees if they feel like they are too close to the powerlines. As far as the libertarian is concerned - he can say what he wants. I've noticed his other postings. |

It really is sad. We've had two trees on our end of the block killed by "pruning." It now looks completely different from when we moved in, too. The only thing that we have growing are the telephone poles, which I didn't even see until the trees were cut down! We did get a new DPW sapling planted in front of our house last year. 15 years... |

Do you want to stop this? Then stop posting. Call, then go to the members of the Township Consul and ask each to put a stop to this. Posting will do nothing.

The trees at the end of Pierson Road may have appeared to be have been "thriving" but in fact many of them were dead, dying, or structurally unsound. Last fall one of the black cherries split and landed on a guide cable necessitating the need for DPW to be called out. In other instances trees were in close proximity and a threat to the primary power lines. Nobody likes to see healthy trees destroyed but if safety to pedestrians and property are a factor than the decision must be made to remove the problem tree(s). |

but sensitivity to and consideration of other's distress should modify one's judgement. yes, you are right. with all that is going on in this world it is best that we get all worked up about a couple of trees. lets be indignant and get so angry that we completely lose the ability to see some humor in it. damn straight!

Suzette: I assume Toad knows what s/he is talking about since Toad has been the resident tree expert on this board for many years and has a good track record when it comes to diagnosis/recommendation regarding tree issues in town. Howver, you might want to contact Gary Lenci who is the current director of our public works department, which includes shade tree care, for his input before bringing the matter to the attention of the TC who will likely turn to Gary Lenci for input anyway before taking the matter further. Mr. Lenci's contact information may be found on the official town website and in the current issue of the Leaflet.

Thanks again everyone. We have spoken to Gary Lenci without much success. Will go to next Town Hall meeting and see the Mayor. Incidently the black cherry tree that split last fall was because of a WM garbage truck that backed into it while collecting garbage. I watched it happen from my window. |

They had to hire a service from Texas to cut down trees in New Jersey? What's up with that? FWIW - Although I understand and respect the need to protect the power lines....I'd be annoyed with reckless cutting too. |

Libertarian, so will it be OK next time people belittle the things that concern you? Or should we be checking with you so you can straighten us all out with what's important and what's not?

i wasnt belittling anyone. jeez! you people can be downright self-righteous and self important. making a little fun of her use of exclamation points is no reason to make a federal case. learn to relax and find the humor in situations. If i make a serious comment and you find something silly in it, please be silly with it. we will both enjoy it. |

It was this post, where you compared the tree problem with the rest of the world's problems, that I found belittling in tone. If I read you wrong, I apologize. And yes, let's have fun with each other. I think I'll make a joke about self-righteousness and black pots and kettles. We'll both enjoy it.

Although the clearance between the trees and the power lines is quite radical, the fact is that the power lines are contracted now due to the cold weather. During the summer months the primary electric wires will expand and droop much lower than they are now. Everything looks bare now but in a couple months when the foliage is out we will get a much different perspective of the pruning(?)that PSE&G did. |

Suzette says: They are also permitted to come on your property and hack away at your trees if they feel like they are too close to the powerlines. Libertarian: I do not understand why it was not that statement in her posting which drew your attention rather than her use of punctuation marks. What right does a private company at the behest of a governmental agency have to come onto someone's private property? If Suzette were accused of a serious crime the Police could not come onto her property without a warrant.

anon - actually, they could come onto her property without a warrant. entering the house is another story, but I don't think the complaint is about PSE&G entering someone's house and chopping down a ficus. |

Tree cutters visited our street on Saturday to save the poor power lines. They managed to butcher my neighbors tree. When you drive up the street it actually looks like it was cut in half (vertically). Yet they left two random branches, one of which is touching one of the wires. Another tree down the street is actually cut in the shape of a Y with the power lines going down the middle. |
