The Mayor is just one of five members. He has no more power than any other member. He is just "first among equals".

Really? In every case he's usually the last to vote. And, he only needs to get two members of the committee to side with him. Then if there's a tie he has the final word! I think that gives him a little more power...

If the mayor has no more power than the other 5 TC members, why does Fred want to be mayor?

I think the Mayor is the only one of the five who gets to officiate at weddings at Ajc's place. Other than that, the mayor is just "capo di tutti capi".

The mess is now taking on a look of it's own. In particular, the jumble of stone wall in the pile surrounded by grass but at the end of the duck pond area is starting to look like a miniature abandoned movie set of an ancient megalopolis. The town mower has mowed neatly around it, so it stands out quite nicely. It could also be mistaken for modern sculpture.!!!

ffof - I was not ignoring you but rather waiting to have clear facts before posting a response. In any event, Jerry has explained that we are now going to the bonding company to get the project completed. The work is about 92 percent done. We do not think the bonding company will take too long to sort this out. A letter from our attorney was sent out on September 16th and we expect an answer sometime next week. Our attorney and engineer will be contacting the bonding company if we feel there is a delay of any sort.

As for the riverbank planting, that will have to wait until the spring. It is too late weather wise to do that portion of the project now. The park will be returned to its normal appearance but it will not be until the spring.

I did ask the Township Administrator to send in our crews to secure those areas where work is still to be done to ensure no one is injured. Additionally, I asked them to make sure the asphalt path near the bridge is useable and safe.

You asked about sending in town crews to do the work. If we did that we would then take all liability to complete the job. The best recourse is the route we have taken, that being working through the bonding company and holding them responsible for job performance and completion.

- Mayor Vic DeLuca, September 18, 2002. 10:40 a.m.

I'm sorry, Xavier67, I *have* actually been ignoring this thread because it had long ago drifted way off topic... in fact I only came to look because I saw my name in the first few words of the posting

This project has been discussed at every Township Committee meeting for the last few months. At the meeting tonite (that I just got home from), we learned for certain that the company has gone toes up. There have been indications that this might happen, unfortunately.

Companies bidding on public projects like this are forced to post a performance bond. Early this week the Township notified the bonding company that the contractor was in default. Our expectation is that the bonding company is going to engage a contractor to finish the job.

Gee aqua, that was then and this is now! The sculpture really is so pretty, quite attractive actually. I mean, who needs new landscaping anyway when we have a new beautiful sculpture-like thingie mabob to gaze upon? And mud and rocks make a wonderful habitat for something I'm sure, but I just can't think of what right now. I'll get back to you in 8 months.

Has anyone else seen kids climbing these imposing hills and throwing debris from the piles into the river? Someone is going to get seriously hurt if something isn't done to either remove these all too tempting piles or make them more inaccessible.

HELLO TOWN COMMITTEE!
HAVE YOU SEEN THE PARK RECENTLY?
IT LOOKS LIKE S--T!

Have you seen the lovely graffitti on the fake stone walls by the ballfield? It includes the word "f--k." Lovely atmosphere.

re Vic's reiterated post above. "You asked about sending in town crews to do the work. If we did that we would then take all liability to complete the job."

Well, isn't the town responsible for delivering me a working park - it is liable to supply me that, no ? So what liability - insurance liability ? Are we just supposed to stop thinking when the word "liability" is trotted out ?

So the town sits on it's hands and doesn't even do a bit of clean up ?

How about a complete update here on MOL or in the N-R about the state of the park and progress to clean it up. Good lord man, it cannot be as complicated as it is being made out to be.

SAMPLE LETTER

Happy Anniversary!!

Only 27 more shopping days until the anniversary of the start of this thread. Ffof, annoyed at the botched, protracted cleanup from a storm many years ago, asked on June 19, 2002 when the mess was going to finally be cleaned up. In September, Ryan and DeLuca responded, (one *was* ignoring the thread, the other wasn't, apparently) with excuses. Wait till spring, they said. Well, its Memorial Day Weekend, and our park is still broken. Still, there has been no response since September from Slick Vic and the Thick Mick. And this is in the Official Maplewood area.

They have the stones to brag about this as an accomplishment!!! Continue the Progress! HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA H A

The township doesn't run either this site or the News-Record. As Vic says, they've put all the information out at TC meetings. Maybe you should be complaining to the N-R.

"Thick Mick" isnt an ethnic slur, is it? Please respond since I and many others are of some Irish descent. Talk about unnecessary and out of line.

It was a.... a.... a pun. I couldn't think of any other words that rhymed with "yick". Oh wait! I know one. [expletive deleted]!

I think that after a few more weeks, the grass will be so long that it will completely obscure the enormous pile of equipment and wall pieces. Isn't it a violation of a town ordinance to not mow?

And do we need the orange screening all over the place....and I mean, it's all over the place. Not to mention the 5 foot poles everywhere. I tripped on the netting the other day; that was fun.

This is the date that I started this thread. Almost one whole year ago (minus 16 days). The debris left by the wall job is still blessing us with its presence.

Okay, so there's some action down by the stream...finally...after one year.

But may I ask, why did those little tiny shade trees get chopped down? They couldn't be "root-balled" and transplanted? They don't seem to be so near to the soon-to-be-new wall unless the wall is going to take some seriously wrong trajectory.

AND, since the guys were there to chop down these nice trees, didn't they look up and see the FOUR DEAD trees just on the other side of the stream? FOUR. YES, FOUR DEAD trees.

I'm sorry to have missed the meeting about landscaping the other night. ANyone have a report? Were the DEAD trees mentioned?

Ffof,

Here's a recap of the meeting:

The mound of dirt is now starting to grow trees and bushes. It looks so good, it's going to stay. It will be called Mt. DeLuca.

The dead trees will be milled into lumber for the "Huemer Span", a literal and figurative bridging of the East-West gap. The Huemer Span will traverse the Duck Race River in the newly-named "Great Strawberry Fields" section of Memorial Park.

"Naturegirl Bench", crafted from the trunk of the dead dead dead White Oak sits in one corner of GSF, and a pair of uneven-legged benches form a cozy convo nook. The "Anon Bench" leans to the left, and the "Tjohn Bench" leans to the right.

The retaining walls, replacing genuine old-world style classically hand-built stone masonry, will be made of genuine new-world style classically machine-poured concrete, hand painted to look almost like old-world style classically machine-poured concrete.

Overlooking the riverwalk area is the great lawn, complete with oversized trash barrels for the hygenic collection of canine waste materials.

A Coffee Kiosk, "Les Beans" will offer a diverse choice of hot and cold beverages and WNBA discounts.

This is all due for completion no later than September, 2009.

> Aquaman, this is the official Maplewood Header.

>> I know.

> Well, you're not supposed to post your stupid pithy comments in here.

>> Pithy?

> Not here.

>> Mt. Deluca was funny.

> No.

>> Les Beans?

> Please.

Dog Runs STINK! We were in Tomkins Square Park this weekend and the stench near the Dog Run reminded me of last year's hot topic.
