Almost in conjunction with posts about how annoying it is that other people park in front of my house, when there are other places to park. Usually after a strange car appears, litter appears. Usually I clean this up myself. However, recently I wanted to do an experiment and view my tax dollars at work. I left the garbage right there on the street, mind you the garbage is a napkin, bubble gum rapper, crushed paper soda cup, and plastic wrap (think CD covers). We are working on day three that this crap has remained in the street. Before I rip someone a new hole, I thought I would ask first.

OTOH, the street sweeper seems obsessed with my block. We've watched him go 'round and 'round several times. You could eat off of our street when he's done. I thought I did see him in December.

I guess that I always assumed that in the dead of winter there is no street sweeping.

Green,

Are you kidding? There is debris (pebbles, crushed stone, salt, etc.) all over the streets where I walk in town. He needs to get to work in other spots.

You are joking, right?

They sweep cleaned Claremont Ave. yesterday . It was easy to notice because it looked like a debris field the day before.

Purplebug, I think the proverb that applies here is that it's easier to light a candle than to curse the darkness. Leaving the trash is an interesting test, but it's also an eyesore. Your irritation will subside very quickly after you dispose of the trash, because it will no longer be a constant irritation.

No, I have a large load of irritation. . Everytime I look in wallet and see no money because of my tax bill, I will wonder what other ways my money is wasted

Purplebug:

If the litter bothers you, pick it up. When you do so, think of all the money you are saving by doing this yourself. Your taxes would be very much higher if the town paid for as frequent street sweeping as you would like them to.

...Pdg, every morning when I go out to pick up my newspaper, I take it out of the yellow bag and use the bag to hold the butts, paper, bottles, and cans thrown out on Elmwood Avenue.

Besides good exercise, I believe that God and government helps those that help themselves. Listen to Joan, she knows of what she speaks...

I have to laugh when I read some of this stuff...especially the "not plowing part"...We are so lucky to live in a town that looks as nice(for the most part) as our town looks. There is always going to be litter on the ground..some residents or visitors to our town do not care about asthetics and dump their stuff on the street...many a Saturday or Sunday morning we come out of our little street and find empty 6 packs and pizza boxes on the street from "youth" I would imagine who choose to party in their cars...I cannot imagine not stopping to pick this up...Such sour grapes here...instead of complaining I think that it would be nice to come up with a solution...These thoughts are just my humble opinion....
Have a great weekend!

Now I have almost become oblivious to the garbage. As I stated earlier, I USUALLY PICK UP THE GARBAGE when it is there. But as EXPERIMENTATION I wanted to see how long it would stay there before the city swept. I do not know WHEN or HOW OFTEN they sweep the streets. That is why I have not yelled at anybody. I thought I would try and be somewhat RATIONAL and ASK people what the situation was first.

When I have sour grapes, believe me, everyone will know, whether I am Maplewood Train station or Newark Penn Station

There is no set schedule for street sweeping. The sweeper(s) go out based on the weather. If it is too cold the debris is frozen to the ground or the water the sweeper sprays ends up freezing on the street creating an ice condition.

For sweeping purposes the town is divided in to 6 sections. This time of year the sweeper has to go over the same streets several times before it is completely clean, so that adds to the time between sweepings on your street. Last week they finished above Ridewood Rd. and this week they finished below SA and stared above SA by Maplecrest Park.

If you have any more questions about the sweeping or any other DPW related issues please call me @973-762-1175 or e-mail me @ Supervisor@twp.maplewood.nj.us

You cleaned my street today. Before you did so, I had parked my car in front of my house, so I caused you to miss a section. My mistake! Thank you for the good job you did.
