I recently sent an e-mail message to a township department head and received the following message:

Technical details of temporary failure:
TEMP_FAILURE: Could not initiate SMTP conversation with any hosts:
[mail.twp.maplewood.nj.us. (10): Connection timed out]

Does this mean that the town's e-mail isn't working properly or is this an anomaly?

The advantage of having a township government e-mail system is that residents who can't make it into town government offices during regular business hours have a quick and reliable means of communicating with our officials. There is little sense in having such an e-mail system if that system doesn't work.

Joan,
I have had e-mails sent to me from residents in the past. I just tried my e-mail and it didn't go through either. I will advise Town Hall in the morning.

Eric:

If it isn't too much trouble, if and when you find out, could you please let us know when the town's e-mail system will be up again?

Thanks.

Joan,

There was a problem with the provider. I just tried it and it worked for me. Good Luck.

Thanks Eric.

I already got the reply from the department head I e-mailed on Friday and the response was everything I could have hoped for. Hears hoping the town doesn't have any more e-mail provider probelms in the future.

This e-mail is a really great way to communicate with town officials.

I read that South Orange trustees must now use township email addresses, so that their correspondence is on public record (on the township provider's servers). This sounds like a good idea for Maplewood, if it isn't already legally required.
