That's it. I'm done. I won't go back there. It's pathetic. The place is unbearable. The "people" who work there are drones and they move slower than snails. There's usually only person at the counter, except when there's none. I was there earlier this week, mid-day, and the half-witted mouth-breathing baldo that was working the counter spent almost half an hour doing 2 passport applications while there were > 8 people on line. Isnt there a dedicated person to do that? The new hours? Stupid, stupid, stupid. And someone needs to take that crappy AM radio and smash it into a million little pieces. It's excruciating. But, it's not my issue anymore. I'm going to the Milburn PO any time I need USPS services. |

The last two times I went into that post office I waited for more than half an hour each time. I hear the the Millburn post office works really well. I think that they are understaffed at the Maplewood office. However, I overheard the guuys behind the counter telling customers not to complain to them, but to please call and write letters to Newark and complain. They said that with new additional hirings the problems would go away. My question is this: Are these guys working even slower than usual to prove the point that they need more help? Could this be a plot to get us customers to complain enough so that they have an easier work day? Or could these guys really be that busy that the service is this slow? |

The service is so slow because there is only ever 1 guy behind the windows. Seems like this is new with the change in hours, but I'm not sure. and I HATE that I can't get to the PO til 10am. How busy is the PO, really, between 4 and 6? Anyone been at that time? Is this helping anyone. If so, I'll stop complaining, but I have my doubts. |

It is a nightmare between 4-6; I was there twice around 5, waited about 40 minutes each time and just swore never to go back. I must add that I was there today around noon, one guy working (the one Mr.T refers to) the counter only but he told the passport seeking person she would have to wait as he dealt with other customers. |

Ooooh, the Maplewood post office drives me crazy! There's one worker, he looks sort of like Wallace from Wallace and Gromit - I KNOW he goes extra slow when the line is long and people are restless. I think it's the same guy Soulful calls the half-witted baldo. Thanks for the tip about Vauxhall Jet .

I've been fine there every time, but I haven't gone many times. There's also a post office on Springfield Ave in Maplewood. It was fine the one time I was there. I think I read here on MOL that their lines are shorter.

The staff at the Vauxhall Post Office is wonderful, friendly yet professional; even the customers seem less stressed! The parking lot is way too small, but there's a long side street next to the Post Office where parking is pretty available. I've tried to patronize them ever since, some years back, the USPS was threatening to shut the office; I figured if I and enough others patronized the office and increased the revenues generated, it would help the post office stay in the good graces of the USPS. (Seems to have worked!) There's also a new Philatelic Center (they sell first day covers, a wider variety of commemorative stamps, stamp-themed merchandise and other items of interest to stamp collectors) on Mountain Avenue in Springfield. There's a nice-sized parking lot in the rear; the postal clerks are typical of most post offices, but I like going there both to find different stamps and because it's easy to park. |

Try using USPS.com or Stamps.com Then, all you have to do is walk in and drop off your package and never wait on line. And, if it is a letter, you can leave it in your mailbox at home, or in a mailbox on the street. Or, I am not sure if Maplewood has this, but, in the SO Post Office (which is worse than Maplewood), there is a machine where you can buy postage, and just mail your package. These are all better alternatives than waiting! |

The South Orange Post Office is just as bad. Maybe even worse. I tend to go to Maplewood (not since the changes were made though), or Livingston, or Millburn. Luckily I haven't had to mail a package lately. The couple I did, I sent FedEx. |

At the TC mtg this past Tuesday night it was mentioned by Mayor Profeta that he met with the Mayor of Irvington and Sen Menendez about joining the sorting of our mail with Irvington in one new facility on Springfield Ave in Irvington. Our mail carriers would then have to pick up our mail in Irvington....Two retail only outlets would be left in Maplewood...Will this improve the situation? I wonder...write your congressman... |

Moving the sorting operations out of the village is an old idea. It's a good one too, but good luck getting the post office to agree to it. They'll have to be bought off somehow. |

One benefit of the in-town sorting is that in-town mail gets delivered ridiculously fast- often the next day. Yes, the Village post office is not the place to go when you are in a hurry, but the people are very nice and I hate to see them publicly made fun of like this. Imagine if you had to do boring things in an all-fired rush day after day for unpleasant people. I also very much enjoy the Vauxhall post office, but the parking is not better than the village, it is very difficult to get in and out of that lot even in my teeny Saturn! I love the new hours- it actually makes it possible for me to go to the post office without taking a break from work. I agree that Maplewood should get a postal machine for DIYers to mail packages- but when Morris Plains got one people complained loudly about that too. |

I love the new hours too, and have always been treated professionally and politely at the Mpwd post office. That said, the lines are overly long, though I have never seen the guys deliberately slow things down. I certainly have seen customers who can't seem to fill out forms correctly and who require way too much personal attention to get their mailing chores accomplished. This doesn't seem related to whether they are bald, fat, or whether they breathe through their mouth or nose or both.

Jennifer Pickett-One of the things that we can do in life is make choices...if a job is boring and seems to require an all fired rush day in and day out.....the person doing that job can choose to do that job in a pleasant way or in a way that lets people know that they are bored and tired. The second choice is what I see at this post office. Customer service is a part of that job and any job dealing with the public. I am concerned that there does not seem to be anyone "in charge" at the Village PO that monitors the actions of the front desk clerks. A smile once in a while or even acknowledgement that the lines are long would go a long way in my book...I do my business near my office because of the attitudes that are repeatedly shown at this branch. |

The Maplewood post office makes me batty. I've never found the guys there to be purposely rude (okay, sometimes), but when I go to Vauxhall or Livingston or to the USPO down the shore, I get real friendly service. The two main guys in Maplewood seem to be on a slower speed. Maybe its the only way they can get through their day - but they just look so dang miserable. Then there's this blondish guy who scampers through from time to time. My guess is that he's in charge as he'll never look people in the eye. It's unbelievable. Our mail carrier is such a good guy - I would hope the people working the retail end would be the same. And why on earth should I have to wait 30 minutes at 2 pm in the afternoon during the week? I can't stand that place. I don't go their for plain old stamps - but when I have to send something certified or something like that. |

I thought the Maplewood post office was going to be closed or reduced to the size of the Vauxhall office in 2008. The P.O would stopped making Maplewood a distribution center and the town would get control of most of the land and building, which they could turn around and sell and start getting some new ratables after it was redeveloped. Is this still going to happen? |

I actually have spoken with some of the clerks and was told that they are shorthanded. One of the guys in the back of the post office told me that they have 2 people in training. The exteded hours have not helped the situation. In 2000, I had a meeting with the Postmaster (I think his name was Jeff Gannon) and he told me that the lease on the building was through 2006 and could be extended through 2011. I'll call Mike today and see what he has to say. Cheers. P.S. Dogbert, You forgot the "0" after the "4". |

and 40 cents (roughly) to drop an envelope in the mail and have it taken anywhere in the country? C'mon...it is still one of the best deals going. Cause no matter how great email is, there is nothing, and I Mean NOTHING better than getting a good old fashioned hand-written letter in the mail. Now...given that and the fact that I do a TON of business with the PO., the new hours suck. They don't help anyone ever. |

I went to the Vauxhall PO this week as someone here suggested. I parked right out front, and there was only one person on line in front of me. The woman behind the counter was all smiles and good cheer. I was outta there in about 6 minutes. I'm sold. One small issue: Upon my departure, the lovely woman who helped me said "have a blessed day." Although I understand and appreciate the sentiment, it IS a federal facility and separation of church and state is the law. |

I called Mike Brisbane's office this morning and he was able to see the long line at the PO (there must be a camera!). He told me he would talk with the postmaster and get back to me with how this situation will be resolved. I'll report again when I hear back. Regarding Fotboat's post, Mr. Brisbane seemed certain that there are no plans to close the post office. |

This discussion was printed out (not by me) and the Postmaster of Maplewood saw it and threw it into the garbage can. As far as Mike Brisbane goes, he is just a customer relations guy who, I believe, has zero authority/power to do anything substantial. ALL of the problems associated with the Maplewood PO have occurred AFTER this Postmaster came here (about 18 months ago). I do not have the time for, nor will I bore you with, the details of what has been happening in there. You probably wouldn't believe me, anyhow, it's that outrageous. The carriers, clerks and supervisors there all have the same opinion of him. NO ONE IS HAPPY IN THAT OFFICE. IT IS A MISERABLE PLACE TO WORK, AND IT SHOWS. I would strongly suggest that if you are not happy with the direction that the PO is heading in (which seems to be a common opinion in this town), PLEASE notify the Newark Postmaster and/or your Senators' office. If enough people complain, maybe something will happen.

Um, letters, my friend. I'm grateful that you risked your job to say that. But thank you, because now we know that the Maplewood postmaster doesn't take our complaints seriously. And we know whom to complain to. And now we can't exactly prove that someone under him said what you said, but it the Newark postmaster may be interested in the story anyway.

Tom, Thanks. As you know, I was trained to be a manager by some good people (who no longer exist, sigh), and after watching this guy for a year and a half I have not a clue what he is thinking or what his goals are. I suggested complaining to Newark, but since they are the people responsible for putting him there in the first place, I do not know what good that will do. I have heard that they also gave him a bonus last year . TRULY MIND-BOGGLING! |

If doing a good job isn't his goal, then he is probably motivated by fear. That seems to drive people who do lots of irrational things. Some fear that others will see their incompetence, so they are blustery or defensive or whatever.

Better close down this thread, the Vauxhall P.O. will get too crowded and nobody will go there anymore (tip of the baseball cap to Yogi Berra, there, lol). I was there Wednesday to mail my tax returns (now revealing my Luddite tendencies, I know), and it was great--the way the workers greet their customers, like neighbors, it's almost what I think a general store used to be like. There's none of that heavy, "I'm dealing with a quasi-governmental agency" feel to the interaction. |

"If enough people complain, maybe something will happen." Thanks Letters, but if we really want to make the point, I say it would only take few dozen people to picket in front of the post office with signs, and a reporter with a cameraman from the Star Ledger. A call to FOX NEWS would also help get some attention to this issue... However, the first problem I see is this thread has been up for a few weeks and only a hand full of posters have responded to it... Is it really a problem or not? |

ajc-It seems to me that there was a similiar thread around Christmas time or maybe after they changed the hours-lots of posters then...I remember posting that I do all my post office business at the Chatham PO, near my office because they are so much more pleasant to deal with...I would rather park and walk 2 blocks to go to Chatham PO than have a parking place right outside the door of Maplewood PO and go there. I never had a problem with Springfield Avenue PO- they were my # 1 spot before the hours changed. Now that is inconvenient for me.

I always go to the Maplewood Post office in the Village, but I don't go that often. I most of the time bike around town, so parking for me is not an issue, and everytime I go to the post office, I have found everyone nice and have no complains. Even the couple times I brought my bicicle inside the post-office, they were very welcoming and nice. |

I've tried to go to the post office three times this week, unfortunately with my 2 young kids due to Spring break. The lines have been to the door (albeit the interior one) and didn't move for 10 minutes. I had to give up & leave because I can't expect my kids to be well behaved for terribly long standing in line and don't want other patrons to have to listen to them. (I still need stamps and to mail a package...) I liked the early hours better. 8 a.m. there was never a line & I was in & out quickly. |

Mail your packages at FedEx or UPS. There's a FedEx on Vauxhall Road in Union (bring exact change or credit card). It's usually cheaper than the PO, very short lines (if any), cost includes insurance and tracking, and they're open in the evening. For stamps, buy them from the machine in the lobby. Some CVS stores even sell them. PS - On the receiving side, the FedEx/UPS service is wonderful. Both the UPS and FedEx delivery guys leave my packages at my back door. The Post Office leaves everything exposed on my front porch/stoop (my street has a lot of foot traffic). |

Well guy's, I just visited the satalite Post Office opposite world tire on Springfield Ave. and the beautiful young lady behind the counter was gracious and knowledgable in her duties. Besides a smile goes a long way nowadays. There was no waiting with easy parking. Now perhaps just because it was during the day and no children were out meandering around the stores, I don't know. Just saying that my expierence went off quite well. Now if I can only get my tax rebate back as swift. |

Now something completely different. NOT! So, I get of the train and think, hey maybe I can get my tax returns in the mail real quick. I walk over to the PO to check and yes, it's still open and completely empty. Yeah me thinks. So I say to the clerk I'll just be a minute need to fill out some forms. Now since none of the three pens at the desk work in the main room work, I go to that little foyer room and start filling out my forms. Suddenly one of clerks starts locking the doors to the main room, and when I ask him when they are closing he says seven, and walks over to the main doors, waiting for me to leave. Mind you I have like a few more lines to fill out on the form, but I he clearly has no interest in helping me, and I think to bad, guess I was to late. So I leave, thinking well gotta try tomorrow, and stand in line for ever. So as I walk to my car I check the time on my phone. Guess what it's f%$*!ng 5 minutes to seven. So tomorrow when I come back I'll get the jerks name and will report him to whoever is his boss. I'm pissed.

Abernethy, sorry for misleading you. Did you manage to get your tax returns out in time?

I stopped into the post office yesterday and dropped my taxes into the box inside the building. It said last pick up time was 6:00. I dropped in it there at about 5:00. I am hoping for the best. There was a line through the first set of doors almost to the outside doors. I didn't look to see how many people were behind the counter, but I would guess only 1, like every other time I have been there. I hope the people at the end of the line were able to mail their stuff before the post office closed at 7:00. |

Being the good postal worker that I am, I used H&R Block's TaxCut to do my taxes this year (and by the way it was pretty easy to do, I even compared it with the last 3 tax returns that I had done professionally and they were the same) and then sent them in via the internet with the direct deposit option. I had my money within 8 days. I'm doing it this way from now on. |

I really didn't want to get into this conversation, but today's experience really got to me. I was in the PO around 11:45 to send an express mail letter. I had an envelope at home, but needed the mailing address forms. The line was past the inside entrance doors! I found the mailing forms, but there were no working pens inside or in the lobby! Tried to get the attention of a clerk, failed. Finally begged a pen off another person in line, filled out the forms, and then got on the by this time, longer line then before. And then the waiting! The grumbling of others got pretty loud, several people behind me gave up (lunch hour after all) and the stiring of a revolution was in the air! I watched with some experienced amusement as others tried all the pens in disbelief. Two clerks were "on duty" and another one I had noticed taking a break in the parking lot as I arrived. I got out at 12:25! Incidentally, has anyone else noted that the clock that used to be on a wall is no longer there? Did they think we wouldn't be as upset if we couldn't watch the time go by? |
