While driving past the Pool today I noticed a sign stating the lot was NJTransit property and violators would be prosecuted. Is this a recent change, isn't this public land (hence the dog park debate regarding use)? What happens to the garden club sale? All the questiona and more shall be answered on the next edition of . . .

I think you just have it backwards. They don't want people from the Public Service buildings parking in the pool lot.

John - Yes. As far as I know it's municipal property.

I believe the town rents out part of the pool parking lot to NJT in the off season. This is another example of how much demand has been placed on all of the open land we have here in Maplewood.

Having spent my childhood and teenagehood at the pool, including 5 years as a lifeguard, we accepted that the whole property still technically belongs to the Ward Homestead, or whatever they call it these days. They donated the land back in 1965 or so, but the township doesn't actually own it.

I don't know whether or not this is true, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was NOT property of the Township, technically. The pool doesn't have access to the same public funds as the Library, for example, and I am under the impression that it is completely self-funded, hence the high membership rates, waiting lists, antiquated infrastructure and embarrasingly-low wages for the employees. (Did you know there is a Federal, Seasonal Minimum Wage lower than the regular minimum wage?)

Does anyone know if the Maplewood DPW is responsible for re-surfacing that lot? I know that there are no township people responsible for the groundskeeping, the way the parks and other buildings are. I myself have mowed that lawn more times than I would like to admit.

Perhaps the original issue about whether or not it belongs to NJTransit is simply to deter civilians from parking there. One might be more fearful of being ticketted/towed by a private corporation than by the Township in which they hold residence. "Property of the Maplewood Community Pool" doesn't sound terribly imposing, especially during the off-season.

I love my pool.

I don't know about the land ownership. However, the pool is a muncipal owned utility as wacky as that might sound. In other parts of the country (and maybe in NJ as well) it is common for municipalities to own the electric utility, water utility, etc.

I also believe people who live in the condos across Boyden from the First Aid Squad building are allowed to park in the lot, at least overnight.

I also don't think there is a waiting list to join the pool anymore.

Residents of those condos must obtain a permit to park overnight there. I don't know if there is a fee but I would imagine there could well be. And people have definitely received tickets for parking there overnight without a permit. (A problem for new residents, apparently, as the communication about the situation is not very good.) I imagine the First Aid folks are given a permit to display on their cars.

There hasn't been a waiting list to join the pool for several years now which is nice.

Just to add something. The police have set up a check point right there going from Elmwood towards SA. So if you are smuggling illegal immigrants, don't go that way.
