1) Beginning May 1, 2006 the Township of Maplewood will start recycling scrap metal. You can call the DPW for a curbside pickup or drop it off at the Recycling Center on Boyden Ave.

2) As of May 15, 2006 you will not be permitted to drop off electronics at the Recycling Center. There will be 4 scheduled dates a year for electronic recycling. This year's dates are June 10, September 16, and December 15. The county is also holding an electronic recycling day in mid May.

3) Essex County is holding it's Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday May 6, 2006. You can pick up a flyer at any municipal building.

If you have any questions please feel free to call me at 973-762-1175.

eb - will the town be putting flyers at the train station too? I can never get to the municipal building when it's open. I'm curious what is considered Hazardous Waste for the pickup day. Thanks.

What is considered scrap metal?
I already put out tuna fish and soup cans in one box and soda cans in another...

What example of household waste would be scrap metal?

Thanks for the other dates!

Tom- There were a couple of reasons. The first was that we had a lot of businesses and people from other towns dropping off their electronics at the center and we were getting stuck paying for them. The second was that we were concerned about the theft of the computers from the center. There are a lot of people who don’t wipe out their hard drive and we didn’t want anyone getting their personal information.

LilLb- I will have the flyers dropped off at the train station this morning. Hopefully no one throws them out. Hazardous waste included on this day are items such as: Pesticides and Herbicides, Paint thinners and solvents, Oil based paints and stains, chemistry sets, propane tanks, pool chemicals, Automotive fluids such as antifreeze, motor oil, steering fluid. Darkroom photographic chemicals, Household batteries, Fluorescent bulbs and ballasts, Mercury and Mercury containing products, Gasoline, Kerosene, Household cleaning fluids, Car batteries, Fire extinguishers, Driveway sealers, aerosol spray cans.

kmk- When I say scrap metal I mean items such as: air conditioners, refrigerators, washers, dryers, bikes, and any other bulk items that are made of metal. We will not take any tanks that contained any type of gas.

If you have any other questions you can reach me at 973-762-1175.

Is anyone going to the Essex HAZMAT day?

Every year, we have something and we can't make it.

Yes - I'm wondering if someone can take our HAZMAT. As stupid as it sounds - I know what I'm asking and what it entails...

I've got some old photo chemicals, etc...

Vent: and why only one day a year?

Why are only oil-based paints allowed for hazardous waste, but not latex paints?

joy, I believe I'll be going. Drop your materials off on my lawn, in a thin coating. Seriously, contact me.

LilLB, oil must be more toxic than latex. I think the oil paints have all sorts of petroleum distillates in them.

I suppose, but I have latex paint to get rid of - can't they just pretend latex is just as toxic. I mean, after all recycling is all about MY convenience...

I have some stuff that helps accelerate drying out the paint cans so I can get rid of them through other means, but I was hoping just to kick 'em to the curb on May 6...

LilLB:

You can throw out latex paint any time since it isn't hazardous. Leave the cans open until the water base paint evaporates (pretty quick on a day like today), clean out the the paint can to remove the pigment residue (warm water and paper toweling will work) and just put the empty cans in the trash or use at home for storage.

Thanks Tom!

I'll look for them this weekend - they're buried in boxes in the basement - and contact you.

Joan - it's the "leaving the cans open" bit that I'm concerned about - I don't want the neighbors cat to wander in (they have an outdoor cat) or other animals that scamper about to get into the paint and ingest it. I did actually buy some stuff that should accelerate the drying, so it should be fine. I think I'm probably overreacting, but I wouldn't want to cause any injury to the surrounding animals.

Lillb...cats..ah, I've heard people say
they put kitty litter in the latex paint
to dry it up. Long as it doesn't leak out
in the garbage trucks...should be ok.
