I often see people litter. The difference today is that I also saw and noted their license plate number. We have littering fines here in Maplewood. The township committee is even considering strengthening the ordinance. Here's the problem: How do you report littering and how do you enforce the littering fines? So I put it to the test this evening. I called the Maplewood police dispatcher and asked for a desk officer. I was unable to get past the dispatcher, so I gave her my report. She informed me that I could come to the police department and file a report. When asked about anonymity, she put me on hold. Once she picked back up, she took all of the relevant information and told me that the police would take care of it. What will become of this littering report? Probably nothing. I did this to prove a point and now feel even more helpless with the littering situation, a true problem that I experience daily on my property! UUGH! |

do what i do, go outside, clean it up, and leave the police alone to deal with things more important than my indignation. |

I pick up litter on a DAILY basis. Litter along my 250 feet of street frontage. Litter in my neighborhood park, often totalling 3-4 grocery bags at a time! If as many people picked up litter as those who ignore it, we could minimize the problem. Unfortunately, we will never be able to solve the problem, since litterers think that there is nothing wrong with having other people dispose of their garbage. |

Picking up is a never-ending job around here. This evening, in addition to the usual plastic bags and candy wrappers, I found a glass teacup. Go figure. |

Squeaky - I hear you. I have seen some pretty outrageous littering around here. People act like the outdoors is their garbage can. I think it's just plain tunnel vision ignorance, and if someone could catch them and take the time to tell them that throwing all their children's diapers out on the street will someday harm their children, maybe they would understand. Unfortunately though, I think the people who treat their world like this may never care.

Foul. People wouldn't dump their trash on their living room floors (we hope) yet they feel no compunction dropping crap all over the streets and the parks. Why people feel it necessary to soil their own nests (see also: the graffiti thread) is way beyond me. |
