So, my neighbor while walking his dog said he saw 2 wild dogs from the path where everyone runs and bikes in South Mountain Reservation. Has anyone else heard or seen of them? I take my dog and my daughter in the woods all the time, and am now somewhat afraid of running into these dogs.

Could they have been coyotes? They do exist in NJ.

A year or so ago there were two wild dogs in the Reservation. They would from time to time chase a deer into Maplewood, SO and Millburn. My wife actually saw them having a deer for "lunch" in the ball field next to the Millburn Library. Both were captured or destroyed.

Last fall we saw two dogs along the side of the road in the S turns on SO Avenue.

They exist.

There have been reports of Coyotes in South Mountain Reservation, although I don't think anyone has a picture.

I haven't seen any wild dogs, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. I have seen a crazed pack of Bichons that surround my dog and bark at him. They are usually seen with their pack leader--an elderly woman who walks them off leash and doesn't say a word to them.

All kidding aside, I do know that dogs have been dumped in the reservation. They are caught and brought to the JAC. I would suggest to your neighbor that the next time he sees them, he should call animal control or the JAC.

We have absolutely seen the coyotes...on two occasions.

The first time one was running down Cedar Lane from Wyoming towards Ridgewood Road. The second time one was in the lawn in front of St. George's church on Ridgewood. Both sightings were in the evening around dusk.

They are dog-like - then it hits you, these are no pets...closer to a fox really.

They are red foxs . I 've been in the Res every day for the last 15 yrs. I have only seen them about 4 x , but once while playing Byrne, one of them ran out on the 3 rd green & stole my fellow Maplewoodians golf ball. We gave him a drop with no stroke penalty.

On the way home today, saw two largish dogs in the middle of S.O. Avenue in the reservation (near Millburn). Don't know if they are wild, but they sure don't belong in the road in the park!

One was medium brown, maybe with a red collar, the other dark. Didn't get a good enough look to say more (not good at IDing dog breeds anyway)

Red collar = NOT wild.

But possibly running wild...certainly not on leash or at home.

Funny--my husband, who runs in the reservation a few times a week, saw a fox for the first time ever there yesterday morning.

Someone who lives near the reservation is missing their French bulldog. I don't think it's a large dog. For those of you walking the reservation, please keep your eyes open.

PS. I posted the dog's picture in the please help area. Susan, would you look at the picture? The missing dog has a red collar. Does he look like the dog you saw?
