I need help from a town official about the town's policy of keeping a sidewalk clear. My problem is with a 10 foot section right in front of the office building at 111 Dunnell Road. Those who take care of the property have let the shrubbery overtake the sidewalk. It's difficult enough for one person to get past. For two people, its impossible. I've said something to the landscapers who take care of the property, and they have ignored me on both occasions. I've spoken to a number of my neighbors who go past it everyday to get to the train, and they are equally frustrated. Can someone please tell me what can be done about it, thank you. Darren: I know what you mean. Sometimes when I am out walking in Maplewood, I am tempted to get out a machete. Overgrown folliage spilling onto and over sidewalks is a problem all over town; not just on Dunnell Road. Same goes for poorly maintained sidewalks and homeowners who insist on parking on the sidewalk portions of their driveways. On the one hand, we are being encouraged to walk around town more so that the air pollution and parking problems can be reduced. On the other hand, walking along some sidewalks is akin to walking on an obstacle course. If each of us took greater care of the public access portions of our property and showed some added consideration for our neighbors a post such as yours would have been unnecessary. I really don't know what the town can practically do to remedy the overall problem, given staffing and budget constraints. |

The code official can issue a warning and then a summons. |

Eb1154: True but the town code official can't be everywhere. To really solve the problem, the code official has to rely on complaints received and how many town residents feel comfortable "turning in their neighbors"? If we all show a little respect for each other by taking better care of our property, there would be far fewer instances in which such a warning or summons would be necessary. |

Joan, Yes, wouldn't that be nice if we could all show respect for each other.... however, I believe that such a suggestion is a perfect example of Ideal vs. Real. Darren, I would forget about speaking to the landscaper. Ask those equally frustrated neighbors of yours to join you to speak directly to, or write to the owner of the property and state your concerns. I would be surprised if the owner, after being made aware of the problem, would refuse to clear the sidewalk. A good honest and friendly effort on your part should resolve the problem. If anyone in your group feels uncomfortable about communicating with your neighbors, I would be happy to do it with you. It's true, the town code officials can't be everywhere. Therefore, going to the code officials should only be necessary when someone out and out refuses to cooperate. Good luck. |

I agree that the code officials can't be everywhere yet: - they do show up in the fall (right ahead of sidewalk repair guys) to issue violations for hairline cracks in your sidewalk - they do show up in early spring (right ahead of calls from landscaping companies) to issue violations for overgrown shrubs in your backyard Seems like the best approach is a friendly talk with the property owner. |
