The light cycle hasn't been corrected since the last posting on this topic several months ago.

Ya get 20 seconds to get your S.U.V. onto Springfield Ave or across Boyden.

I just remarked an hour ago that I was able to get
through the light in one shot. It had been a major
problem. Someone told me it might be on cycles.

I use that intersection daily as I turn left onto Sprinfield Ave heading toward Irvington or crossing Springfield Ave to get to Seth Boyden School. I have had NO problems since the adjustment was made. Sometimes I have to sit through one or occasionally two cycles of lights (if NJT or PSE&G commuters have just ended their day) but the cycles are fast enough that it is not really an inconvenience, just a pause in an otherwise rushed day.

I'm at this intersection several times a week, and I've noticed that the traffic light has gotten a little longer for Boyden Ave & Springfield Ave. The red light on Boyden Ave. just before the fire station seems to confuse a lot of people, as they don't know where they should stop when it is red. The sign by the first light indicates that drivers are supposed to stop there, not run that light to stop at the 2nd light. The first light used to be a blinking light, so I guess that's why the confusion. My only gripe still is the light trying to get out of Boyden Parkway, where I have to go to drop off my friend's son. There, only 2 cars can get through the green light before cars 2, 3 & 4 find they have to run the red to get out. I don't see why that light couldn't be extended to let at least 5 cars out safely. I see too many people at that entire intersection running the red lights too often.

The light has been adjusted more than once since the streetscape work was completed and will be adjusted again. The fact that the intersection is a 5-way intersection makes it that much more difficult to determine an optimal signal sequence. My experience is that it has gotten better with each adjustment but we're still trying to make it better.

Currently, the SA crossing at Boyden is on a cycle of 20 second green for 8 changes and then a 25 second green. That cycle will soon (next week?) be changed to 20 second green for 3 cycles followed by a 25 second green. It is expected that this cycle change will further alleviate the problems described above. This change in sequence should also help the traffic turning off of Boyden Parkway onto SA.

Also, fyi, after the repaving of Boyden Avenue (scheduled for this summer)the southbound left-turn-only lane is going to be extended further north beyond the firehouse. This should also help in moving more traffic through the intersection when the Boyden light is green.

Thank you Ken...

However, I believe one of the problems may be is there's no left turn delay in either direction for Boyden Avenue traffic turning on to Springfield Avenue.

I'm only guessing, but even a five or six second delay would give turning traffic a jump on making a turn where now only one or two cars, and too often no cars get to make the turn when the cross street traffic on Boyden Avenue takes off like a bat out of hell...

Thanks, Art. I've sent Rich Calbi an e-mail with your thoughts.

Kap
Thanks for the response. The cause of the problem is simple. 20 seconds only leads to frustration. Frustration then will lead to accidents caused by trying to beat the light.

...as an example for Springfield and Boyden, has anyone noticed how well the few second delay works for turning traffic at Prospect and Parker works?

kap,

Will 5 extra seconds every 4th cycle really make a difference?
Shouldn't the design goal be to clear all the waiting vehicles each cycle?

Can you say how long the BA green light was prior to its change to 20 seconds? Also, how long is the cycle between BA green lights?

Sorry for all the questions, its just frustrating because the light was working fine before it was changed.
