The Township will sponsor a memorial service on September 11th at 6pm on the steps of the Maplewood Memorial Library, 51 Baker Street. The program will consist of musical selections, readings and a candlelight vigil. A quiet room for meditation will be available. In the event of rain, the program will be held inside the library. Participants are asked to bring a candle with them.

At 7:30pm a Service of Remembrance, Reflection and Healing will be held at Prospect Presbyterian Church, 646 Prospect Street. Morrow Memorial Methodist Church is co-sponsoring the church service.

and Ed?

That blither reminds me of the Larry King style of writing.

"Do I love asparagus... Angie Dickenson had the greatest finger nails..." and so on.

I'll add my blither, then. There are more than a few of us who are reminded, by dates, times, the sound of planes or a trip into Manhattan, among other cues, of September 11. Honestly, I'm not one of them, but people respond in different ways to the events in their lives. Maybe we can give Ed and others who may want to share some of that the space to do so.

That's what I was think, Brian. Sometimes, the thoughts of 9/11 just hit and one needs to share the feelings and pain associated with it.
I feel like Ed, that MOL is a place to speak(post) and share with friends all the thoughts, remembrances, difficulties, etc.
When there is no one near to listen, MOL is always there.

IMHO....if you're STILL so affected by 9/11, MOL isn't the answer. Therapy is.

CFA:

A great many of us were deeply affected by 9/11.

Two of our regulars have posted that they were INSIDE the World Trade Center when the planes hit.

Many of our other posters were in lower Manhattan that day and were among those evacuated by ferry and train. Some of them had to pass through clouds of debris to make it home safely.

A great many of our other posters had children in the school system who waited anxiously for their parents to come home and claim them.

Three people in South Orange/Maplewood died. Their family and friends still morn them.

Many others in our community lost close friends and family members that day, who just didn't happen to live in our towns.

There are very few people in Maplewood and South Orange who were not affected by what happened on 9/11, even fewer who won't remember that day for the rest of their lives. It takes a lot more than one year (possibly more than one lifetime) to fully heal from such a trauma.

Ed is entitled to grieve openly. So are the rest of us.

There is a major distinction between reflecting on a ceremony conducted by the Township last month and being cripled into inactivity by fear and/or anxiety resulting from last year's attack.

If more of us could show support for eachother and eachother's feelings, there would be less need for some of us to seek professional help.

Joan,

I am not doubting that people were affected. I was there that day myself. I'm just suggesting that if people are still affected, maybe open grieving isn't enough, maybe they need professional therapy.

Those of us who post on MOL are not licensed therapists (well, maybe some are, I don't know) but my point is that they would get more help from a professional than they would here.

Cfa:

I agree that there are a number of people in our two towns so deeply affected by 9/11 that they need more help than this on line community can provide.

I just didn't sense from Ed's post that he fell into that category. Maybe I am wrong. Rereading his post again, I see that it could easily be interpreted as a cry for help.

Only Ed knows his need for sure and I think it would be inappropriate for us to ask him openly how he feels just now.

I for one have been helped greatly by the discussion on this message board, especially the dialogue during that first week immediately after the attack, when none of us knew what would hapen next.

Come to think of it most of us still don't....

Joan,

I read your post on Saturday, and I read it again on Sunday, and I'm reading it again this morning. Thank you.

Your expression of feelings is heart felt and meaningful. Yes, and …

"If more of us could show support for each other and each other’s feelings, there would be less need for some of us to seek professional help."

There is a lot to say about sharing... and we sure do a lot of sharing here on MOL. Yes, your right Cfa, maybe some of us need professional therapy, and hopefully some will get that message from the discussions we have here.

Thanks Vic for the Forum, and thanks Ed, Us2innj, Brian, Nancy, Joan, and Cfa for keeping the conversation alive.

PS: Ed, when I read Joan's post this morning it was 9:11AM, it's amazing how often and how many different ways the memory keeps returning. Hey, like Nancy said, we have MOL 24/7, and everyone is always welcome to drop over here any morning for some pancakes and easy conversation.

Joan - very, very well said. Your words are a much nicer version of what I was ready to post before I stopped myself.

Ajc,
Do you deliver these pancake breakfasts? Along with the Times, please?
