Is it just me or do others have a problem with the cop who crosses the kids on Baker Street near the middle school ?. Now I do appreciate the fact that he does safely cross the kids and I do realize that kids can try your patience but I think his gruff, disrespectful way of addressing the kids (and sometimes their parents) is uncalled for. Am I the only one who has a problem with this guy ?. |

You mean the handsome police officer of a certain age with the mustache? He's one of my favorites! He's gruff but that only adds to his charm IMO. I was on his wrong side - once (shudder). One time on the wrong side of his stare-down - never again! |

I know a couple of parents who don't care for his style, but I'm OK with it, and actually kinda enjoy it. The other parents, chiefly it's because he's given them the business for jaywalking and such. We've chatted about bad drivers whizzing by the intersection, scofflaws in general. I've never heard him say bad things at or about kids -- though I have heard him give kids some stuff for dangerous behaviors when crossing the street (cell phoning, iPod in ears). This I don't mind. He tends to be a bit old school, and expect respect. We have similar views on this stuff. I see him earlier, en route to getting some breakfast with my kid, and then when she and I part ways (me for the train station, she for school). We've struck up a bit of relationship from that and no doubt that helps. But, as with Lydia, I find him charming and very effective. |

A more important question is whether we as a community should have a problem with police officers being pulled from other duties to serve as crossing guards. |

That's a good point, Joan. I have wondered why some crossing guards are civilians and some police officers. And, who funds both. I suspect that with the older kids, police officers get more respect. I've also wondered whether it helps them form bonds with the kids -- which could be useful beyond the crossing guard duty. To that extent, it may be a good thing -- seeing officers outside of a crime report/incident. |

Police Officers are directed to school crossings where traffic is heavier. I believe also, that Spencer "walks the beat" in Maplewood Village when not acting as a crossing guard, so he is taken away from the beat only when school is starting or being let out. One of the very desirable factors in a town such as Maplewood is that the school children are placed at the top of priorities. Their safety is upmost in the minds of the people running the town. The Police Department has many duties, and providing a safe environment for children is one of them. |
