Several days ago I went to pick up my daughter after school. On the way I saw a Maplewood police cruiser, lights flashing, heading toward Seth Boyden. "Uh oh" I thought, "What's going on?" When I got to the parking lot there were two cruisers and the officers were talking to a few kids. I went in to sign my kid out and learned that a teacher had accidentally set off an alarm while re-entering a portable. I walked outside to get my kid from her track program, passing close by the patrol cars. That's when I saw that the officers were taking the opportunity to build relationships with kids by answering questions, etc. When the track kids were done they went over to the patrol cars as well. The officers did a really nice job. Instead of being ticked off that they had to deal with a false alarm, they used to opportunity very positively. They spent at least 30 minutes that I was aware of. I complimented them both. |

C - That is really nice - I've found the police in Maplewood are really great (and I'm not just saying that to get out of my inevitable next parking/speeding/moving violation ticket) Once I had reported some graffiti on Ridgewood, the officer came over to my house after they'd documented it and removed it just to give me an update personally - he couldn't have been nicer. He complimented my garden, gave me hints on how to revive my orange tree, chatted with my kids, etc. It was like a Norman Rockwell painting come to life. |

I have never been disappointed in the MPD, from the polite involved rookie foot patrol officer to the best lieutenants around and all else in between. (Never met the chief so can't comment there.) Caring, professional and efficient. |

I agree. Once, I came home w/ 2 babies to find my back door wide open, when my habit is always to close & lock it. I called MPD and they were at my house in 2 minutes. They walked all through my house and didn't let me back in until they had checked every room. I had probably left the door ajar by accident when I left. I was apologetic about it and they said, "No, you absolutely did the right thing." They actually made me feel good about my decision to call them. They couldn't have been nicer or more professional. |

Is John P who I think he is? Can I post his last name on MOL? If he is who I think he is he went to high school with some friends of mine and they all worked together right out of high school. One of those in the group works as a Correction Officer, one is an Orange Police Officer, one an officer in East Orange, and the last works for the Red Cross. If he is who I think he is I agree, he's a nice guy. |

CBataille Copy your post above. Personalize a bit and send it to the precinct headquarters on Dunnell. The cops around here get beat up so much on line and on the streets that a note, as nice as your post, would be so very welcomed by the officers. They probably get plenty of mail about what the cops do WRONG. Send them some about what the cops did RIGHT. It will make a difference. |
