Well, my curiosity clearly exceeds my patience. Waiting and seeing would clearly answer this question, but in the meantime, what purpose is going to be served by the chalk lines (and grooves in the pavement) that go perpendicular to the traffic flow on the newly paved secions of Valley Street?? They're way too close to each other to be crosswalks, and even the ones that are parallel seem strange if they're going to be traffic or bicycle lane markers...can anyone shed light on this for the curious and ignorant among us??

[I did post this elsewhere, but it occured to me that someone "official" might be reading this section of the Message Board.

I asked someone the same question this morning as we were driving on Valley. The markings are too narrow to be traffic lanes.

They may indicate where pipes or other utilities go under the street.

Or they could represent what the guide wheel on a striping machine would follow in order to have the lines layed down where they need to be.

Let me edit my previous post; the marks represent where saw cuts need to be made in the road surface,to keep expansion joints in the concrete base under the asphalt, from telegraphing through and cracking the new surface. The saw cuts serve as a control joint of sorts.

No, I think John Caffrey is right. Better start polishing up on your Klingon.

They striped Valley St properly yesterday or today or so. The striping is not on those mysterious lines. We may never know what they are, and they'll soon fade.

Tom--See George post, then take a walk along Valley and you will see the joints. Makes sense to me.
