Does anyone know what happened to the Traffic Calming Study? Mention of it has completely disappeared from the town website. |

Funny you should ask Richard. I just received a letter dated July 26, from Richard Calbi, the township engineer thanking me for "participating and responding to the traffic calming needs study." It goes on to say "Over 100 questionnaires were received..." Kinda pathetic turnout, if you ask me. I would have thought they would have gotten a lot more. Oh well. I'm guessing you must have gotten the letter too, if you sent in answers. |

The results of the traffic calming survey are posted on the new town website: Traffic Calming Study Results Please take a moment to browse the entire site and provide any feedback to the assistant township administrator, Brandy Forbes, at asstadmin@twp.maplewood.nj.us. Keep in mind that the site is still under construction although several new features have already been added. In addition to the expanded listings of township news, departments, services, etc., we will soon be adding an interactive feature which will allow residents to make service requests and submit comments to any township official or department. Mr. Pettis: Is there anything missing from the site? All I found was a one page summary which didn't offer much information. How exactly will these problem intersection and roads be studied? Which professional traffic engineering firm will be helping the town do the work and what is their timeline? Will residents have any input into the solutions? What is the timeline for implementing solutions? "As early as 2007" isn't really a definitive timeline. I think most residents that responded were hoping for more feedback. |

-Initial studies for remediation will be performed in house with additional professional assistance brought in as needed. -The type and scope of the work necessary at particular locations will also determine when and if outside assistance will be contracted. -I believe that engineering services have to be put out to bid once we've done our own initial studies so at this time I can't tell you which firm will be used. -It is my opinion that solutions to the problems at the identified locations are best addressed by trained professionals. I will, however, consult with the township engineer to ascertain his thoughts on accepting any input from citizens with the necessary expertise. -As stated in the web site posting, we are limited financially as to what we can do in terms of the studies, much less implementation. Any major work that needs to be done will be prioritized and funding requested by the engineering department for the next fiscal year's budget. Some solutions may be able to be implemented with existing resources and it is those that would most likely be done by early 2007. It is our intention to update our progress on this initiative on the township website. If you have any further questions please feel free to private line me. Ken Pettis |

How about beginning at the beginning with some... LAW ENFORCEMENT!!! The lack of enforcement of the simplest rules, such as speeding and failing to stop at stop signs, is out of control in this town and our children are in danger (I am, sadly, "waiting" for the day a kid will be severly hurt by Tuscan school where I live, and I bet you the town will act all shocked and contrite and at last do something about the situation). 1. Where is the police while we all know everybody speeds in Maplewood. Start at Springfield, Prospect, Valley, and all the adjacent streets that are used as shortcuts... 2. How about some "sensitivity training" for some of those officers. Perhaps then will we avoid the "this is not a priority for us" or - worse - the "I don't care" I have have been told upon calling the police station. 3. Want some revenues for the town? How about giving the old lady handing parking tickets a break, and start going after the law breakers that endanger us all. This town should stop the B*LLSH*T and start enforcing NOW!

There's a very simple solution to this that probably hasn't been considered....(at least not that I've heard mentioned)....the Devices that photograph Red Light Runners and Stop Sign runners are now being used to photograph speeding. I've seen the presenations these companies give to municipalities, and in Fairfax VA, they raised a $gajillion in fines in the first week alone from one installation. Needless to say, it's a positive Net Present Value project (in the town coffers) but as usual, I would imagine Maplewoodians really don't want to solve the problem because they would rather speed. |

Put one of those at the intersection of Valley and Tuscan and the town will make a FORTUNE. Someone traveling along Valley runs the red light probably every minute. |
