This is more a vent for whats around the corner in regards to detours, road closures, etc.Granted, nothing lasts forever, but it seems to me that there could be a coordinated effort between local, county and state road depts.,to avoid the glut of projects going on at one time.We all know that the 78 project is going to impact us probably more adversely than is otherwise being said in the media.Morris and Springfield Aves.,as well as 24 and 78 are nightmares on some mornings and any shortcuts that avoid these areas are soon to be fair game to everyone looking to avoid this mess.On top of all this, locally,we have the water co.cleaning and re-lining mains and the milling/re-paving of Boyden Ave.Everyone just wants to get their project completed, the public be damned. On top of all this,as per law, local, county and state hwy.depts, must take low bidder on all projects. How many homeowners, upon getting 3 bids, choose the cheapest bidder? More times than not I think they take the middle guy.Lets also not forget that come Sept.,school buses, soccer moms, etc.,will re-enter the mix and the traffic dynamics will probably change again.O.K.,rant over. |

What is the alternative? Let things crumble? Have two week blackouts or the equivalent in terms of road closures and/or water service cuts while emergency repairs are made? |

If you compare our infrastructure to an old, falling apart home,I think that you would prioritze for starters in order of importance making sure things were done in such a way as to avoid having to re-do them.Next,I think you would be as thorough as your pocketbook would allow,as to avoid premature failure of the work.Lastly,an independent agency whose budget or job stability are'nt the purveiw of the DOT or corresponding local or county agency to monitor the work.Suggestions like working at night, running double shifts,or offering performance bonus's for finishing ahead of schedule and on budget,vs.penalty's for over budget and behind schedule. |

The fact that there is so much building and rebuilding seems like a good sign to me. Sure, it's inconvenient, but that's part of the cost of living.

There's also the reconstruction of the "covered roadway" 1-9 approach to the Holland Tunnel in Jersey City. With the additional congestion on 78, the Holland is going to be hard to get to, making the Lincoln hard to get through - and that's after you work your way around the construction on 280. It would be sensible if they could only work on one route at a time, but now three major arteries to NYC are partially blocked. |
