As a commuter who crosses Valley Road in front of Town Hall on foot every morning I'm finding it more and more precarious to do so. What can be down to let drivers know that they are to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk. Downtown we have those markers in the middle of the road to remind people. Is it possible to put these on Valley as well? |

Wmarion, #5 post, welcome to town, or welcome to Maplewood Online. If you look in the attic, this was a long topic about a year ago. The answers received were, walk a block or two to the lights, or run! It was said that the town has little control as Valley is a county road. I wanted to build a bridge or a tunnel to allow for safe crossing. Nothing happened. Better luck. |

At least better lighting is needed. I almost hit 3 peds last night. Granted, they were all dressed in black and running through traffic, but the lighting in that area is poor at best. How about a pair of "slow, Ped X-ing" flashing yellow light signs that opperated during high traffic times? |

The lighting in that area has actually been improved significantly. I can remember when that intersection was so dark that I needed to shine a flashlight whenever I crossed the street there so drivers could see me. Now the problem seems to be more in the line of drivers waiting to make a left turn onto Valley Street who are so excited when they see a break in the traffic that they don't look to see if a pedestrian is trying to take advantage of the same window of opportunity. I would like to see a traffic light at that intersection so pedestrians could cross in greater safety and so that an opportunity could be given every once in a while for traffic on oakview Avenue to pass through the intersection. |

I've been meaning to ask an elected official about this problem for some time. For anyone walking up or down Oakview from (to) the train station, crossing Valley is a real problem. Since it is a County Road, does that mean nothing can be done? I don't think a stop light is necessary (I'm sure that would be too expensive), but how about a speed bump. I'm fairly new to town, but I'm surprised that issue hasn't been address given that it isn't just a problem for adults, but for any kids who want to get to the park in that general area. I live on Oakview so it obviously concerns me a great deal since my children will have to cross that quite often. |

It has certainly been discussed here a number of times. I too live on Oakview and find that it is also very difficult to cross or turn in a car at certain times of day, which leads to drivers taking dangerous chances. I'm not sure why we couldn't have a traffic light there ... perhaps one that reverted to a blinking configuration at lower traffic times. However at school start/end times and morning/evening commute times this intersection is difficult and dangerous for drivers and pedestrians alike and some sort of signal control is badly needed. Apparently the powers that be have don't agree, in light of the signals at Baker Street and Oakland, but something needs to be done. If not a traffic light, how about a 4-way stop? |
