When I turn on Channel 35 I get New Providence Public Access Programming, I called Comcast and they told me because I live on the border of Maplewood/Millburn, that's just how it goes. Does Maplewood pay comcast to provide this Channel to the Residents? I have missed watching my kids in their school plays (although I do attend them), and I would like to be able to watch the TC meetings.
Can anyone help me with this issue
Thanks

Grw,

Yes, either get off the damn couch and come to the meetings, or move to New Providence...

I would think the TC is the place to bring this to, as they have the agreement with Comcast to provide cable service to residents. I don't think Comcast has the right to exclude any resident.

Of course the new FCC laws may let them do whatever they like....

Grw:

The problem is that the SOM and New Providence stations share the same broadcast frequency. Short of increasing the broadcast signal of the SOM station and moving the New Providence station to another broadcast frequency, I am not sure what Comcast, the Town or anyone else can do to help.

Grw: No, Maplewood doesn't pay Comcast to provide the public access channels; it's actually provided by them as part of the franchise that they have with the town. They actually pay US money, not vice versa. Also, Joan's not correct: the problem you are seeing has nothing to do with broadcast frequencies, actually. The head end of the cable system you connect to supports three public access channels. Because of where you live, it sounds as though you are connected to a different head-end than everyone else in town. Most everywhere in town the Comcast PA channels are Maplewood, and (i think) Union and Irvington.

You should write a note about the issue to the office of the township administrator in Town Hall on Valley St. I don't know if anything can be done to remedy the situation short of hooking your cable feed into a different place in the network...

I'm sure you know the comment was in jest, but as you can see, the truth can be stranger than fiction...

Where are you heading with Dave's suggestions? It looks like you'll have a tough time either way you go...

Good luck! Art.

Jerry,

I would think the town could lean fairly hard on Comcast here. Since each municipality grants an exclusive contract to its cable company, I would hope the company is obligated to provide the same service to all residents.

In addition, aren’t cable companies required to provide some level of public access programming, pursuant to the federal statutes that grant them their monopoly status? If so, they should connect each customer to the correct municipal feed.

Separately, I would hope Comcast would view this is a public relations opportunity. After all, they send their PR people around to appear in front of the Township Committee once or twice a year to remind us what great value we’re getting for our subscription fees. I’d be curious who answered grw’s original inquiry, but I doubt it was that solicitous PR rep who appeared in front of the Township Committee a couple of months ago.

Anyway, just a few thoughts…

- Tom

Please have someone look at the tunnel under the train tracks (the tunnel next to the station). It looks unsafe. It leaks all the time and cracks are everywhere. It looks like a disaster waiting to happen. Considering the winter we have had with all the freezing and heavy snow I am very concerned.

Congratulations Grw.... Good for you!

I'm glad you're staying, we need all the people we can get to watch the TC meetings. The truth is I knew all along you could do it; you just needed a little prodding.

How come the Ch35 feed was cut off last night a few minutes after 10pm, right in the middle of some citizen talking about the secret fundraising for the skatepark?

Rheims,

I can't tell you about why the feed was cut off, but it's no secret fund raiser for the skate park.

Please check out my post regarding the Oscar Party, Sunday night, March 23,2003, 7:30PM at the Maplewood Train Station, then write a check for $25.00.

Who knows, you might even win one of the Oscar's we're giving away for yourself...

I just received a call from Michelle Mead,Business Administrator, she told me to turn on Channel 35, low and behold, I have the Maplewood Channel.

I would just like to publicly Thank Michelle for addressing my concerns and acting on them so quickly. She is as pleasant as they come.

To Mr. Ryan Thanks for the advice
and to ajc, now I have a choice, I can go to the TC meetings, or I can sit on my couch and not miss a thing
