The reflective street signs are quite awful here in Maplewood. Aside from being rather small, the reflective print is ineffective. When your headlights hit the sign, the letters actually become darker than the background. This isn't a real issue when you know where you're going, but has proven to be a problem when looking for a house in an unfamiliar part of town. It has been an issue when guests come to visit and need to follow directions. Did "Money" magazine take this into account when they made their evaluation. |

Intersting point. However, my feelings are just the opposite. The new warning signs on Jefferson near Maplewood Avenue and along Midland Blvd. where the "traffic circles" were installed are very obtrusive both during the day and at night. Guess this comes under the heading of you can't please all the people all the time. I wouldn't, however, argue that there isn't a safety issue here. |

I was talking about the signs with street names on it. Not warning signs or the reflective strips that have been showing up on Stop and Pedestrian Crossing poles. The street name signs are absolutely impossible to read at night. |

I agree with us2innj -- they are absolutely impossible to read at night and they aren't that much better during the day. We have to refer people to landmarks to find our street -- and i miss it every time if i'm coming from the South Orange direction. Do you think that reflective paint would work? |

OK, misunderstood and I agree. I will also add that a great many homeowners don't have visible numbers on their houses, which also can be a safety issue if you have called the police, fire or ambulance squad. |

The street (name) signs already have reflective letters on them. I believe they have either worn out, or gotten dirty. Even notice how, when your headlights hit the letters, they appear darker?? The town really needs to get into the 90's on this one, and start replacing them with a larger version of a more readable street sign. I will volunteer to personally stick the letters on the green metal placard. As for house numbers, there was a campaign a few years ago to number the sidewalk in front of each house with the address. I don't know if that fell by the wayside though. |

True, Maplewood is not sign friendly, and that includes the home owners and businesses in town as well. The township is totally responsible for this problem, and Us2innj makes an excellent point by bringing it to our attention again. I believe the TC needs to pass an ordinance to correct the problem, and make it necessary for property owners to uniformly post a street number in the front of their properties. Street signs also need to be clear and prominent for all to read 24/7. Good street signage shows residents and visitors alike that our town has good manners. It also is an important safety factor in numerous ways, including eliminating traffic problems by people stopping at corners trying to read the street name, or making improper turns, and other things that might cause cars to speed around them in disgust. This is especially true at night and in rainy or bad weather. Hopefully someone on the TC will follow up on this thread. If not, anyone who agrees we need help in this area should write the TC, or attend a TC meeting to have them discuss it publicly.
