question: i got on the waiting list for a tree in a patch of land between my sidewalk and street, but the town hall staffer at DPW suggested it would be a long wait. relatedly, i asked about the belgian block curbs and new sidewalks, and she suggested "some streets get them and some don't." can anyone tell me the scoop on getting a tree, and on getting the upgraded curbs and sidewzalks? |

Do you really want a tree? Usually after some years the tree will uproot both the sidewalk and the curb because there is almost invariably not enough growing room provided in our fair town. I know, because this is the second time it has happened to me. Blame the original town planners. |

Hello, Hello, that's cool... welcome to MOL. Well, as long as you're asking, try Home Depot. They have some inexpensive trees, and they're guaranteed for a full year. Rather than waiting for the town, why don't you just plant your own trees. If you need a hand, I have a gas powered post hole digger I can lend you... Good luck.

It helps a little if you don't water the tree too often. Plant it when nature will take care of it. The roots will grow down tward the water table. If you water it to much they grow out, hitting the sidewalk. The other move is to go out once a year and cut the roots on the side walk side with a spade. It won't kill the tree, just stop the roots on that side. |
