my first time to approach maplewood from irvington. i am proud to live in a city that invested in such a beautiful entrance to their town. it was beautiful- a strong statement about inclusiveness- any of those kids can come over and use that beautiful park on tuscan. well done, neighbors. |

I haven't seen it yet, but I can't tell are you being serious or sarcastic? |

serious. i just can't say it very well. after a long journey home last night, the "other" direction on the 25 bus from newark, it was like an oasis. what struck me was how well maintained everything was. beautiful. and no high fences or gates, even subtly. |

I'm sure he's serious... Both the Maplewood Rotary and the Lions service clubs have invested over $2,000 each for four (4) of those gateway signs entering Maplewood. The same signs are also located at the west gate at Millburn and Springfield Avenue, Millburn and Valley, and Parker and Irvington Avenue’s. Thank you Hello for the recognition and such a nice complement. Believe me when I tell you, we really appreciate it! We should also give a big thank you to the township committee for being gracious enough to allow us to bring all these different kinds of signage to our community. (Note that each sign, and/or on the various other donations scattered around town, it also recognizes the service club that donated it.) BTW, anyone interested in Rotary is welcome to come visit us for dinner as our guest any Tuesday night at 6:30PM at Cryans in South Orange. Last week Cryans served all of us Lobster, baked potato, corn on the cob, coffee and carrot cake...

Art et al How come the Maplewood Sign at the border with Union has a big government road project sign right in front of it? It blocks the view of the Maplewood sign. Ed May Ed May |

Art, I've read the threads ounder Soapbox in regard to Springfield Avenue here on Maplewood online... Now that we have transversed Springfield a number of times (well, not as many as most as we're new to town).... I think the street improvements are a VERY important step forward. So many towns have 'main streets' that have been left behind, and there are steps that can be taken to bring the 'main street' back. Towns just have to have the courage to try. The streetscapes can be only the beginning. I myself have often wondered why blighted streets lack trees - are there any plans for new trees on Sprinfield? Do you think we can start some sort of tree drive?

JGTierney, Yes, there are plans that have been made long ago for new trees on the Avenue. If you stop by the Prospect Street node you will see that the grates and spaces are just waiting for the plantings. I also believe I heard at a resent meeting that the street furniture will be coming soon also. Right now they are just waiting on matching pavers to be delivered so they can complete the sidewalks. All and all, this administration has done a great job following through on the initial phases of the planned improvements to the Avenue. It may have taken longer than they like, but the results should have a very positive effect on businesses throughout the area... |
