anon 1. Joel and I should be elected to the TC to get the local property taxes lowered. Lowering taxes is not beyond the power of the TC. 2. The Municipal portion is an important part of the tax bill and should be addressed. 3. "Cutting waste" does not equal eliminating budget items. Michael Mulhern, who we met at the Wellesley Block Party, is an accountant, and understands that fact. 4. We want to improve the Police facilities. The question is, has the Township saved its depreciated dollars in a "kitty" to pay for the upgraded Police and Court Facility? Fire Facility? 5. Getting rid of illegal students is a must. Again, Joel says maybe 100 students times $10,000 equals $1,000,000.00! 6. If it costs more than it would save, then we are doing it the wrong way. 7. The TC, through the BOSE, has veto power over the School Budget. 8. The school board elections should focus on lowering costs and improving education. 9. With respect to "illegal housing" component, we do not want more regulation, so much as to enforce existing. 10. Limiting the number of non-related people who can live together would be aimed at "families" that are formed solely to circumvent the law. 11. Running the town like a business means to satisfy the customers, who are the taxpayers, while controlling expenses. 12. I wish Jerry and Vic would post also. 13. We are trying to answer all of Sbenois questions and Joan's question factually, thoughtfully and with specific details. 14. Jerry and Vic did not get a fair shake from their own party. 15. Perhaps Joel and I would "continue the progress" (such as it was) better than Kathy and Ken. 16. Bob Grasmere was the best Mayor we ever had; if Joel and I could fill the shoes of Bob Grasmere and Bob Klein, we would be proud. 17. I do not think that a write in campaign would work for Jerry and Vic; but who knows. 18. If you are not registered do so Monday October 6th up until 9 PM in Town Hall. 19. We are most definitively not Ken and Kathy. 20. Thank you for admiring us for putting ourselves out there. 21. We ARE trying to come up with ideas. 22. Joel is a gentleman and has been involved in this Town a long time. 23. Visit www.maplewoodrepublicans.com. 24. "Heck Art, I'm so disgruntled by K&K and Profeta and Co. that I might even vote for your candidates!" 25. You may now criticize us. 26. Restructuring of the local property taxes / fixing the tax system in NJ is imporetant, but we cannot wait to lower your taxes. 27. Come to our Tax Revolt/TQM/Town Meeting. 28. We do not agree that if we make the Municipal and School budgets as lean as possible that it would just be a drop in the bucket. 29. Maplewoodians sitting in at the Board of Freeholders or better still the Legislature and demanding tax relief would be great. 30. Rabble Rousers are us. BALANCED GOVERNMENT FOCUS ON MAPLEWOOD LOWER TAXES BETTER SERVICES TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT

Ed says "Joel and I should be elected to the TC to get the local property taxes lowered. Lowering taxes is not beyond the power of the TC." Where, as you see it, are the inefficiencies in Township government and administration? How big (in dollars ) do you think they are? Joel in particular, after running for TC 5 times, certainly ought to have some pretty specific answers for this, he's had plenty of time to find out the details. ================== It looks like you guys have a problem understanding the "marginal cost" concept. An average of $10,000 per student does not mean that each additional student costs the taxpayer another $10K - it may very well add $0 to the budget. Adding 1 or 2 or 10 students might even get the district more in state aid than it costs to add the kids to the school rolls. ================= If by "Tax Revolt" you mean what has come to pass in California, I say "no thank you." California is broken, and broke. Their infrastructure is crumbling and since Prop 13 their schools have gone from being among the best to among the worst in the country. |

Dave, Top of the Morning to ya: Joel, Marilyn, and I enjoyed celebrating my 53rd birthday in the Saint James Gate Pub with you last night. It was also nice running into David, Jerry, and Suzanne. I am sure that you enjoyed your Guinness. But I have a question for you lad. It being 10/11 and all and not three questions posted above. Could it be that Kathleen and Kenneth are still figuring out there questions? Or could it be that ye have a wee headache this morn? Or wait ye until 10:11 PM to post them? Irregardless, Joel and I eagerly await the questions from our esteemed Democrat running foes and welcome them to the campaign race ..... finally. PS Look for all 4 candidates on TV Monday at 7PM broadcast out of the High School ~ Cable Station CCN ~ Channel 19 and 35 broadcast live and rebroadcast early and often. Let the debates begin. Remember the Hilton on the 16th and the LWV on the 28th and possibly the Ethical Cultural and Woman's Club if they decide to go ahead with same. Remind Jaime to post all the debates on the MOL Calendar, please. Thankey. Go Yankees. It is great to be ... in Maplewood! Ed May |

Ed: I was about to tell you that it would help you get my vote if you would use the proper adjective for your opponents, that is, "Democratic" rather than "Democrat", and it still might help, but then I saw that you are a Yankees fan! Looks more and more like I MAY be voting Republican this year. But you may have absolutely lost Sbenois' vote. |

Happy Birthday, Ed. You might be losing the votes of members of stalwart Publican Bill Safire's "squad squad" by using pseudo-words like "irregardless." To get in even better with MOL you might could also get the MOL co-proprietor's name right. It's Jamie (pronounced JAY - MEE), NOT Jaime (which is a spanish name pronounced HI MAY) - unless you're not talking about Jamie Ross at all, but just sending yourself a greeting. And, seeing that this is the "Ask The Candidates" forum, do you plan on also answering the questions? |

Just read the candidates' questions to their opponents. K&K are asking questions to which, I suspect, they have already formulated detailed answers. Two of J&E's questions dwell on the issue of one-pary control of the TC. Despite the fact that "the primary is behind us" I would guess that K&K's answeres to those to questions will be a variation on the theme "we are not Jerry and Vic". Neither set of questions force the candidates to be specific. I much prefer Sbenois questions, and Joan's one question, which I am not sure has ever been answered. |

Anon: Thanks for the reminder. No, my question hasn't been answered yet though it was posted over a month ago. Both sets of questions posted by the candidates in the MOL forum look more like platforms for their own pet positions than a real attempt to get at how each team (or individual) would function in the role of Township Committee member. Dave: Can a panel of MOL regulars (the candidates can even get to chose which ones) post one on-line debate question each (similar to the questions from the audience asked at most of our local debates) which all four candidates can be asked to answer as part of the overall on-line debate? |

Luanda, Thanks for correcting Ed. I can't stand when people misspell it. Tends to happen 50% of the time! Ed, I didn't see you comment on posting the debates on the calendar. I think most of them are up there. Please post them yourself, I don't always get the details. There's a link at the top of the calendar to add your own community event, just click on that and fill in the info. And don't forget the debate tonight at 7pm. Someone just added that to the calendar today. And if you're signed up for the Maplewood Online Emailer, you would have received a heads up on it earlier today. |

Believe it or not, I haven't really decided whom to vote for yet. But positions like "Getting rid of illegal students is a must. Again, Joel says maybe 100 students times $10,000 equals $1,000,000.00!" pretty nearly puts you out of contention for my vote.

I certanly would hope that a TQM business wouldn't be run on such nonsensical precepts as "5. Getting rid of illegal students is a must. Again, Joel says maybe 100 students times $10,000 equals $1,000,000.00! " |

Anon: Here is the question but since I wasn't able to make it to the Hilton Debate, I still haven't received an answer. Perhaps in fairness to all of the readers of this thread, Ed could post the test of his Hilton Debate response on this thread now that he has made it public in another venue. Posted on Wednesday, September 3, 2003 - 7:03 pm: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ed and Joel: What do you see as the key problems facing the Maplewood Police Department at this time and what would you do to improve the situation? |
