[I'm not sure where to post this, here, or Education, or Soapbox, but am posting here in the hope that someone with some authority will read it.]

This is about traffic control and the safety of our children, and, yes, of our adults, too. I find the conduct of the police who direct traffic around the schools to be sorely lacking. (Before I go on, I do want to point out that, by and large, the civilian traffic agents do a wonderful, enthusiastic, attentive job. Cheers to them.)

But the police don't seem to to put much energy into the job. (I am referring specifically to those at (1) Burnet St. and Baker St.; and (2) Parker Ave. and North Terr.) Hand signals are lackadaisical and difficult to decipher. And too often they hold their hands in front of themselves, making it impossible to see the hands, much less figure out what the signal might be.

Why can't they wear brightly-colored gloves? Why can't they raise their hands above thigh-level so we can actually see what they're doing?

I mean these questions and comments in only the best-intentioned way, and sincerely hope there's someone out there who will read this and do something.

Reallytrying I was concerned about that as well. This morning coming from the train and there is a new crossing guard at the train station. Last year there was an officer there, who helped direct traffic. The new crossing guard seems to be a little over his head. There is way to much traffic and children there for someone so inexperienced.

Are you talking about at Baker and Dunnell? That guy seems waaay too timid for that intersection. Who handles this? THe traffic guy at the BOE? I think I'll call.

ffof, that is the exact intersection I was talking about. I don't know who handles it, but it does need to be addressed. Would you post what they say?

I would love to know what you are told. When I've called the Police Department, all I've gotten is, "OK, we'll pass it along", or something equally helpful.

It's not the BOE, it's the POlice Dept. I'm waiting for a call back. I do know that the guard at that intersection is hired through an outside agency. When I hear back, I'll post any news.

Lt Muller from the Police dept (very nice on the phone btw) said that the guard is from an outside agency. They are trying to work with him to "learn" that intersection. He is there to be a crossing guard, not traffic cop. If things don't look better in a month or so, they'll ask for someone new.

Don't hesitate to call Lt Muller with any concerns.

in regard to crossing?

All I know is that they hire a guard when it's a 2hour shift or less - budget reasons. That spot used to be covered by an officer. They're working with the guards giving them a chance to get throught the "learning curve".

The above is a recap of what Lt. Muller told me.

Have you ever seen those crossing guards / traffic cops that Love their jobs? They dance around blowing the whistle and waving their hats. There was one where I grew up that used to moon walk along side the kids when we crossed the road. They’re priceless.
