I live on Park Ave. just off of Valley Street and my husband and I walk home with our 2 year old daugter from the train station every night. Our concern is the lighting. There are a few large lights but there are many parts that are pitch black... so much so that you even trip on sidewalks that are not even. I want to know how we can get something started to put in more lights along the sidewalk. It truely is a safety hazard. |

"It truly is a safety hazard." I agree with you, and the best way to bring attention to any issue is to come to a township committee meeting and speak at one of the two public comment periods. I believe you’ll find the chances are you're not alone with your concerns, and bringing this issue public will give others an opportunity to come forward with more support for the problem. PS: I’d also bring your 2-year-old daughter; politicians always love making a fuss over young children. Take care, be safe, and good luck... |

Sglima: Lack of sufficient street lighting at night is an on going problem on most streets in Maplewood, not just Park Avenue and Valley Street. People can help by installing and using night lighting in front of their houses -- this improves home security too. While we are on the subject, does anyone know why the Town still hasn't turned on the street lights in Memorial Park? |

I called the parks department and then the towns public works department to bring that up. I think the lights were on last night. But you can call the public works dept to complain. 973-762-1175 |

Sglima: Lights in Memorial Park were on this morning, except for the few which are not working at all. Many thanks for calling. Joan |

siglima, If we need to re-light Valley for you, how about Durand, Ridgewood, Baker, Midland, Parker, Baldwin, and on and on and on? Want to see a dark street, try walking Brook at night. Where does it stop? |

George: It stops when people realise that the town can do only so much to provide street lighting. Encouraging homeowners to provide night lighting (with or without motion detectors) on their property can go a long way towards releaving this problem. Still, I wonder if the town is using the most effective type of lighting in our street lamps or if the existing lamps could be modified at reasonable cost so that each lamp would provide greater and/or a wider area of illumination. |

WOW! This is Soooooo New Jersey! You spend skabillions in property taxes and then still have to supply your own street lights. Thats beyond stupid. Have you found politcal corruption so much of your daily life that a lack of sufficient lighting is a not taken for granted? Where I come from, Delaware, we have street lights every couple-a-houses. Just like South Orange. Better look at who's running this town! Curt

Please don't encourage people to put bright lights on their houses. Our houses are so close together that these lights can be really annoying to the neighbors. They can act as a deterrent if they are on motion sensors, but remember that the brighter the light, the darker the shadow around the illuminated area. Criminals love deep shadows. Try to use the lowest wattage available on those outside fixtures. It might help your utility bill too. R |

No problem Curt... Thank you for your support, and you're right about the politcal corruption in New Jersey. The shame of it is, it's not limited to any one party... We should be thankful that Maplewood, at least not to my knowlege, hasn't faced that problem during the past sixty years. Rebecca, I suggest you get together with your neighbors to work out the best way to deal with the lights. I agree that motion sensors will help. Timers with multi on/off options also works well. The Neighborhood Watch program is probably the best thing you can do to protect you and your neighbors..... Good luck. |
