Based on reliable sources at each of the nine polling locations in Maplewood it can be accurately stated with an margin of error of +/- 4% that:

Maplewoodians to Elect May-Ziegler
POB 192, Maplewood, NJ Connie Cosgrove, Treasurer
WWW.MAPLEWOODREPUBLICANS.COM

To the Editor:

As the Republican Candidates for Maplewood Township Committee, in the General Election just held on Tuesday, November 4, 2003, we have a few thoughts to share.

#1 We thank the 25% of the electorate who did come out to vote on that dark and rainy Tuesday, but we likewise admonish the 75% who did not vote. Our right to vote has been paid for by generations of Americans who sacrificed much, and should not be discarded lightly.

#2 We thank the 1,200 voters who voted for the Ziegler-May ticket. You represent a wide cross section of Republicans, Conservatives, Independents, and disenfranchised Democrats.

#3 We commend the outgoing Mayor (Vic DeLuca) and former Mayor (Jerry Ryan) for their years of dedicated service to Maplewood.

#4 We congratulate Kathy and Ken (and the highly organized Democratic organization in Maplewood) for their victory.

#5 We remind the voters that the positions of Kathy and Ken morphed somewhat during the campaign in general, and during the debates against us, in particular.

#6 Kathy and Ken finally recognized that taxes can be lowered, and we encourage them to do so.

#7 Kathy and Ken stated that they can create balance on a Township Committee that remains 100 % Democrat, and we challenge them to do so.

#8 Kathy and Ken, despite their rhetoric, seem to understand the concept of Total Quality Management. Part of their platform was, in fact, TQM, by another name. Kathy has implemented TQM in a hospital environment, and we encourage her to do so in the municipal environment.

#9 Kathy and Ken seem to be recognizing the magnitude of the illegal student problem and the problem of gangs, and we encourage them to address these problems with the TC post haste.

#10 On many issues relating to small business and supporting our local Police and Fire Departments, all four candidates agreed, so we feel confident that Kathy and Ken will represent our views on these issues once they are sworn in on January first.

We both enjoyed the campaign, and will now continue to serve Maplewood in our various capacities. The Republican Party in Maplewood has been jump started, and knows that it must build an organization that rivals them Democratic’s in order to win next time. This task we are starting now and all 1,600 registered Republicans, plus all of the Unaffiliateds, and Disenfranchised Democrats are welcome to join us in this task over the next many months. Please check out the News-Record, Maplewood Online, and your mail box for more details soon. Thank you.

With each of these episodes you undermine your credibility, Ed.
Let it go, man.
Let it go.

A two-party system with energetic competition can only envigorate our politics and sharpen the choices available to the votes. I applaud you, Ed and Joel.

I applaud the effort as well, in fact I did not vote my party's line. what I don't applaud is the petulant tone of Mr. May's post election writings on MOL and now, apparently, in the NR. It leaves me with a feeling of regret.

Well, yes. I voted for Ed, partly because he seemed like such a good sport on MOL before the election. He promoted himself heavily, but in good taste. Since he lost, though, he's shown himself to be a sore loser. That won't help him, should he decide to run again.

"he's shown himself to be a sore loser..."

Tom... Duncan... I'm sure you both are trying to be helpful, especially having voted for Ed, but after getting to know him pretty well over the past two years or so, I really don’t see him as petulant, or a poor loser.

Hey, give the guy another look. I’ve gotten to know you guys and think highly of both of you…. Therefore, I think I must be a fairly good judge of character. Wouldn’t you agree?

Not having met Ed, I have heard nothing but good things about him. So I'll amend what I said. He's acting as if he's a sore loser, and I advise him to stop harping on the election. It may be worth a shot to try for TC again, and harping on his loss could be a bad strategy. I've heard of several instances of Ed's service to the community, and I admire and respect that. Oh, we have spoken on the phone, and it was pleasant.

Better now?

Is it true that Ed's running mate, Joel Ziegler, has just had serious surgery, and if so to what address should I send a get well card?

Anon et al:

Joel Ziegler, my Republican running mate for Maplewood Township Committee, had quadruple bypass heart surgery in early December, spent about two weeks in St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston, and returned home a few days ago. Yesterday afternoon I saw Joel in his Springfield Avenue Law office and Joel looked great! He looks trim and healthy, and has also stopped smoking, and coughing. Joel is required to rest most of the time and will not return to his law practice until February. Yesterday Joel and his wife stopped briefly in Joel's law office to touch base with Joel's secretary Myrna when I popped in to say hello. Except for going to Our Lady of Sorrows for Sunday Mass and walking for exercise Joel is currently resticted to rest and relaxation and must be careful to let the surgery heal fully and properly. Get well cards can be sent to : Joel Ziegler, Esq., Victoria Building, 1973 Springfield Avenue, Maplewood, NJ 07040. His office phone is 973-763-8000 and messages can be left with Myrna or Patty.

Joel! Get back to bed!

Somehow, I sense that you're feeling OK already. I hope the improvement continues.

Actually sir, I am permitted to sit at the computer in my own home, which I myself am still learning to use. Fortuitously, my son-in-law helps me, and my grand daughter, also. The good doctor doesn't want me doing office work, however. God forbid I go to the office! Myrna and Patty are holding down the fort but I am itching for a scholarly legal debate. Sorry I can't make the installation of the new TC on 1-1-4.

JOEL
