I was watching this evenings town council meeting on the local cable channel and I noticed that Mr. Profetta was referred to as Mr. Mayor.

Was there an election that I missed? I didn't notice this on the November ballot? Considering that Mr. Huemer was elected prior to Mr. Profeta why isn't he Mr. Mayor.

Can someone explain this process?

Maplewood citizens elect Committee people. The committee people then vote for a mayor, but the mayor has no unique powers. It's an honorary title.

What Dave said, and the Mayor was selected at the January 1 reorganization meeting. A really nice meeting. They should rebroadcast it on 35.

The Mayor is officially the chairperson of the Township Committee, but has one vote on all issues, the same as anybody else. I think the Mayor has some appointive power, as well.

And the Mayor can perform weddings, so, the next time Britney Spears comes to town ...

essentially, being elected mayor means Fred Profeta is now the Big McCheese on the TC.

...well, you have to give him credit!

From the CHS Class President of 1957, to the Mayor of Maplewood 2004 to 2007. He set his goals, worked hard and long at it, and finally achieved it.

You have to love it. It’s the American Dream... Congratulations Fred, well done.

And don't forget that we get a shot at Kathy in the Mayfest dunk tank this year.

Art:

Not 2004-2007. Each TC member is elected for three years, but the Mayor is chosen each year at the annual reorganization meeting.

Anon:
Absolutely Great catch on your part!

Let's be precise. Huemer is the only Dem TC guy up for re-election in 2004. Let's hypotecize he wins.

It is still a 4 to 1 Fred majority, so Fred will be re-elected Mayor in 2005. (1/1/05 to 12/31/06). Fred and Ian run for re-election in 2005. And let's assume they win. Still a 4 to 1 majority.

So AJC is overly enthusiastc in his euphoric comment. To be expected from AJC. An otherwise solid Maplewoodian.

Let's pretend that the above occurs. A year from now, Humor will whine that it's his time to be Mayor. Then we have Ellen, Jerry and Vic all over, remember their pecking order shannigans?

And Fred, in a burst of CCR PC will defer to Dave Humor who will become Mayor!

My prediction, H will perform more marriages in one year than Grasmere did in 20 years.

That will be a good thing! Marraige is good. Hopefully he will also preside over "Civil Unions".

Reflective,

It's apparent that Fred and company will have a very difficult time ahead of them serving on this years township committee.

Yes, it was a good catch on Anon's part, and AJC was being overly enthusiastic in his euphoric comments.

However, my joy is not what you may suspect. It is more about, there, but for the grace of God, and a few thousand votes, goes I.

Yes, but even worse, imagine that you were on the South Orange board of village trustees! (shudder!)
