I applaud the decision of the Maplewood Township Committee in selecting the "Betty White" site on Springfield Avenue as the location of Maplewood's new police and court complex. The decision followed an open, thorough and well-reasoned process and ultimately reflects what is best for all Maplewoodians in terms of police functionality, good town planning, the revitalization of Springfield Avenue, town-wide tax-relief through the potential for a signifcant increase commercial ratables both on Springfield Avenue and elsewhere in town, and minimal impact on neigboring residential properties. The decision will certainly upset some people, particularly those who will need to relocate from the site, but they will be made economically whole in the condemnation process and will hopefully be able to relocate to an even better Springfield Avenue in the future.

I also want to thank Mayor Profeta, and Committee Members Grodman and Leventhal for their foresight, courage, thinking outside the box and understanding of the big picture. They placed the interests of the entire community first and they should be congratulated for doing so. I am proud to have supported them in the past and will continue to do so in the future.

"police functionality" - the most used word from last night's meeting. Whence its origin?
My dictionary has function, functional, functionally, functionalism.
I know I digress from the main points of last night's meeting,
Oh, while I am in this mood, I almost fell out of the recliner when the mayor suggested the present police station could house multi-use such as apartments and a teen center!
Really, people would clamor to rent an apartment with a railrood in back and a few hundred kids having fun downstairs!

Another point repeated last night was the importance of a police presence on SA. Yet, repeatedly mention was made that our PD has cars on call throughout town and do not sit around in hdqs waiting. The building itself will be a security device?
Oh, and winding Tuscan Road will be the through street for speeding vehicles?

I can't shake the feeling that Maplewood is not giving the grand architecture of the present PD building a fair shake - a glass and box "modern" building will never have a classic look. We are going to lose a wonderful municipal complex to save SA!

Rather I wish the TC would really go to work on that potential 13 area commercial area off SA mentioned last night. Now that would change SA for the better!

Altho the mayor alluded to the real reason he wanted the new headquarters on SA in his preliminary PC comments, I do believe he thinks most of the crime comes right on up from Irvington and the building will stop them in their tracks!

I'm new to the area...What cross street is the "Betty White" site?

What is the timeframe for construction?

The Bette White site is at the corner of Hickory Drive and Ridgewood Road, just off Springfield Avenue, between a Park and a Hard Place.

As for the construction portion of your question, I believe after the litigation process is completed next year, the time table for completion should be sometime in the late Fall of 2006...

El Duderino:

The correct location for the Bette White site is on Springfield Avenue just east of the branch library adjacent to Maplecrest Park.

Given the amount of outcry resulting from the TC's decision, Art's date for ground breaking may be a bit optimistic.

That's weak, Art. You need to chill a little and depersonalize this stuff.

Lighten up Fruitcake... and stop being a killjoy Joan.

Can't a guy have a little fun on this Board once in a while? What do you think Duke? You could tell I was pulling on your tap shoes... Right?

Art:

In a poetic sense, your description of the chosen location for the new police station is far more accurate than mine. As a long time resident, I understand and appreciate your irony.

However, El Duderino writes that s/he is new to town and therefore deserves a more literal response to her/his query.

P.S.: I feel and share your frustration with the TC's chosen location.
