I have a large tree in my back yard that holds a family of three large raccoons. I would love a cheap and humane way to remove these guys. Is there a animal control office in Maplewood? They fight with the local pets and rip up flower beds and garbage. The big one has no fear of people and has come right up to my front door and growled at my cat. |

Be warned that their may still be some rabid raccoons (as well as other animals) in town. We are at the end of a rabies epidemic that decimated the local raccoons. I don't think the Town will trap them for you. However, they may loan you a trap to do it yourself. |

If it is known that there is rabies among the local racoon population doesn't that constitute a public health hazard? I would think that animal control and/or the Board of Health would deem it an issue worthy of active intervention. Try calling both places, citing the information supplied by Bobk. Cathy |

We had raccoons. You can "borrow" a trap from Animal Control for a fully-refundable $75 deposit. Once you trap it, they'll come get it and remove it to wherever. Our raccoons were scratching and clawing and biting apart our rubbermaid garbage cans and making a real mess (before we installed our in-sink-erator, which we absolutely love). They are not afraid of humans, and with small kids, we were concerned. |

We had raccoons this past summer. I learned a few things here on MOL. Raccoons are dangerous. You should take measures to get rid of them. Borrow a trap from Animal Control. Call them when you trap a raccoon. Set the trap on weeknights. They will not come on a weekend, and you should not hold a raccoon over a weekend. Do not carry or release the animal yourself. I made some mistakes myself. I carried three raccoons myself and released them in the South Mountain Reservation. That was dangerous and illegal. Over time, we trapped some cats and also a skunk. The skunk was the scariest incident in that period. I also released it myself, which perhaps I shouldn't have done. Perhaps Animal Control would have helped with that, too. |

Call Town Hall. Their number should be on the official town website. |
