This area is only open to posts by the two candidates vying for the Democratic nomination on Tuesday, June 26. Accounts and passwords for each candidate have been established and emailed to them. Questions? E-mail me at "ross26 at speakeasy dot org". |

E-mail from Scott Kisch today:
Quote: Dave, thank you for the note. I have not checked my mail in more than a day, so I apologize for the delay in responding. I believe you have created a thoughtful, well-structured virtual forum in which Dave H. and I can discuss our positions. I intend to participate. However, my personal preference is to engage individual residents and groups face-to-face. You may post my e-mail address and phone number so that anyone who desires can contact me to schedule a personal meeting ... coffee, house party, walk in the park, a drink ... whatever. One of my post-primary intents (fingers-crossed) is to create a "Public Schedule" link to the website that will tell you where I intend to be on any given day/night/weekend. Nonetheless, I do intend to utilize new technologies to stay informed, listen to the residents of Maplewood, and improve the lines of communication among the community. I believe we can work together to duplicate this campaign forum and make it pertinent to the day-to-day, week-to-week activities of the Township Committee. I would likely ask you to become a partner in that process. I readily admit that I don't have all the answers, nor do I posess the "virtual know-how." In the meantime, please share this with all interested parties. Your interest in this election (and the course of government in Maplewood) as well as your role as moderator is commendable. Win or lose, I will continue to engage in the debates and discussions that characterize democracy as we know it. I'm a lifelong resident of this town, I'm proud of the way it has evolved over the years, and I'm not going anywhere else. Semper Fidelis, Scott home: 762-0173 e-mail: SLKisch@aol.com or mail@scottkisch.com
Scott and I are CHS grads from '83. We went head to head while Maplewood Park Summer Counselors/Softball Coaches and while my Orchard Park Thunderchickens prevailed (one year), his team put up a good fight. He's a competitor and an all around good guy whose signs are on lots of lawns, or so I hear. I hope to announce a face-to-face meet/greet the candidate with Scott sometime soon. I will, naturally, extend the same offer to David Huemer, whom I also wish much luck to, but whom I haven't had to pleasure to meet. |

E-mail from David Huemer shows interest in keeping us informed on MOL! This is great news and I thank David for his input and interest! See my comments below on logistics, which will need to be slightly different, but I think we can get agreement.
Quote: Dear Dave Ross: I am excited about participating in the Maplewoodonline Democratic Primary debate. Thank you for putting this online discussion of issues together, and thank you and Joan Crystal for some excellent questions. I have one suggestion I hope will make your life easier and I think will lead to more thoughtful responses. We could answer one of the already posted questions on each of the last twelve days before the election, starting June 12th or 13th and ending June 24th or 25th. The deadline each day would be the same fixed time (whatever suits your schedule best). You'd post both answers simultaneously. Thanks again for your efforts. Feel free to post this email. Democratically yours, David Huemer

OK, I think we're moving in the right direction, BUT the 12 Days of Election doesn't work for me. Here's why: * it privileges an order of questions, which I don't want to get into (making the last one the least debated). Shuffling questions is not what I want to do either. * it is a logistical problem for me, as i won't be around for all those days. So, I'm asking both candidates to submit responses by next Friday to those questions (6/15). At that point the window of opportunity will close and I'll post everything in one batch at that time (on Sat. 6/16 at 10am). This will give everyone 10 days to read the viewpoints and make a decision. Either candidate may e-mail further questions or concerns, which I will post here, as well. I think this system works well for all involved. An e-mail to both candidates is being sent out a few minutes after this posting. -- Please note I will be adding one more general question regarding property tax reform. |

My e-mail to the candidates:
Quote: David and Scott, This message is to inform you both of two important developments: 1) From this point on I will be sending any correspondence from one candidate to the other candidate and/or posting it in this topic, which is meant to facilitate openness in all our communications. This takes effect as of right now and applies to phone conversations, as well. 2) I have recently posted a basic outline of rules on the message board, but want to give more detail here: neither candidate probably wants to make the first move, and it's tough to flip a coin on the Internet.... so.... let's make it simple. By next Friday (June 15, 2001), please submit your answers to the questions posed in the Primary Debate topic via e-mail (MS Word doc is fine); answers to each question should be limited to 400 words, after which I will truncate the message (a few over the limit is ok, but be careful, please!). After the cut off date, no further changes or additions will be permitted. If only one candidate submits answers, that's all that goes online. There will be no active debate in the topic, unless both candidates express that interest. As far as I'm concerned, this is fine. We are in new territory online and the fact that we're getting detailed responses is really a great sign.

Hi Scott, Send q/a responses to me as a Word document. One big document is fine. I don't want to change rules questions now, so you can post a concluding statement in Soapbox area if you like, but you're on your own :-) Dave SLKisch@aol.com wrote: > > Dave, how do want these responses submitted? The responses are in from both candidates. I just flipped a coin to see whose answer would go first for the first question and David H. won the toss. That means Scott K.'s answer will go first for the next question and they'll alternate on down the list. Keep in mind these are not rebuttals to one another. They are answers to the question. Neither candidate has seen the other's responses. |

OK, all responses have been posted. Note to candidates: please alert me to any problems with apostrophes. I used BBEdit for Mac to grab text from the Word documents you submitted and have noticed a few places where they were dropped. I think I caught them, but wanted you and readers to be aware of this. |
