Are you working to change New Jersey's state tax laws? How or why not? |

SCOTT KISCH: Elect Jim McGreevey. But seriously, In my profession as the in-state political rep for Senator Corzine, I deal with local/county/state officials (non-partisan efforts) on a regular basis and assist in coordinating their collective lobbying effort to reform New Jersey's tax laws. In particular, the school-funding burden on local property taxes. I believe that, by adding Maplewood Township Committee, to my portfolio, I will have greater leverage and influence in this process. I believe this will become a major plus for Maplewood. As a result, Maplewood may gain an inside edge when reform measures and pilot programs are implemented. In the end, this will ultimately enhance our statewide reputation and characterization as a progressive, working community. |

DAVID HUEMER: While I'm running for Maplewood Township Committee, and not the State Assembly, I invite a comparison of my record with my opponent's on recognizing the inequity of New Jersey's property tax law and working to change it. In 1999, I organized an Essex County PTA forum on Property Tax Reform. Representatives from five Essex County communities recognized their common ground on this issue. This April I helped persuade State Senator Ron Rice to co-sponsor S. 1800 (A. 2955), which calls for a constitutional convention for the sole purpose of reforming the property tax. A real shift in the source of government funds from property taxes to some combination of property, income, sales and use taxes would greatly benefit all Maplewood taxpayers. These bills are currently referred to the State Government Committees of the State Senate and Assembly.I urge Maplewood residents to write to the following legislators and ask them to schedule hearings on these bills.
