I didn't see anything else about this on the board. quote:Evelyn Grasmere, Maplewood community leader, Scout leader, 87 Sunday, June 06, 2004 Mrs. Evelyn Grasmere, 87, of Maplewood died yesterday at home. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. June 19 in the Morrow Memorial Church, Maplewood. Mrs. Grasmere was an office manager with the Mountain Water Conditioning Company Inc., a family-owned business in Maplewood, for many years before retiring. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader in Maplewood for more than 20 years and was a fundraiser for the South Mountain Y., where she was honored. During the late 1950s, she co-founded an organization which paved the way for the Maplewood Community Pool. In 1960, she served as chairwoman of the National Womens Auxiliary of the International Water Quality Association, and was the hostess of the first Dickens Village Ball in Maplewood. Mrs. Grasmere served as a regent of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and was a founding member of the Symphonys Amadeus Circle. She instructed inner-city children in an educational enrichment program known as SCEEP in which children are tutored on a one-to-one basis. She was a member of the United Methodist Womens Organization, where she served as treasurer, and participated in the Womens Health Initiative. Born in Montclair, she lived in Orange before moving to Maplewood many years ago. Surviving are her husband, Robert H.; daughters, Hazel Stoddart, Anne Berndt, Grace Schust and Louise Grasmere; a son, Robert H. Jr.; a sister, Anne Ranta; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Those of us who did not know her, can still give thanks for a life well-lived. |

This is indeed sad news and our prayers go out to our distinguished former Mayor and his family. Mayor Grasmere and his lovely Evelyn helped to shape Maplewood for half a century through their community spirit and generosity. I do hope that the Town recognizes her passing and her life by lowering the flag in Town Hall to half staff. |
