Hi, folks...there's a thread in Soapbox that got me wondering: Where are are Maplewood and South Orange police and fire calls/incidents reported? What is considered worthy of such report?

I am used to a different locale where, daily, such things were listed in the paper. The thread in Soapbox is all about some sort of party gone wrong, possibly with a gun and gunshots involved. Seems like such a thing would be officially reported somewhere -- which would also halt some of the rumor mongoring...

Fellow cynic, I would lay a small wager that the incident at the rec center will be reported in the News Record which hits the stands, and the mailboxes of those who subscrbe, on Thursday.

The Star Ledger is a regional newspaper based in Newark and the comings and goings here in MW and SO are pretty much small potatoes unless there is a death or serious injury.

With that said there have been discussions here befrore about just how diligent the News Record is in digging through the police blotter. I think they pretty much just print want the police departments give them and, as is the case with many small town papers, they want to emphasis the positive, not the negative.

I should emphasis the above is my opinion. I don't have any inside information on the workings of the newspaper or town governments.

Appreciate it. Where I came from, most all incidents were reported/listed without edit (almost as if it were a daily press release, by hr by locale). That's where my expectations were coming from. Sometimes it was rather amusing reading, and it was always informative...

Hopefully, the local paper and the police will try to come down on the side of more information. It is, after all, the best way to deal with rumors.

Now, sort of off topic, why can't we have local police blotter reports like those in The Arcata Eye newspaper? A sample:

quote:

Friday, May 14 1:30 a.m. Two men voiced objections to Arcata's demographic makeup in front of a Valley West store. After commenting that there are "too many hippies in town," one of the men did the only logical thing - uprooted decorative foliage from a planter and threw it at a window, then got in his car and drove away. The window didn't break, the plant was replanted and the hippies still frolic, gambol and reproduce.

Nohero,

We can't have THAT because it would require real
reporters and people who could spell.

You're asking for WAY too much for 75 cents, bud.

A guy was robbed of $70 on my block on Sunday evening by knifepoint. Had a slashed neck and bruises on his face, but didn't call the cops since he was an "illegal". Won't be reported.

Welcome to Maplehood...
