Remember that they estimate high at the start, before they know the county taxes. Then next year your Feb. and May payments should be a bit lower. Plus you get that Saver Rebate (1 hand clapping....)

Would someone kindly help me decipher this section of the the 7/19 P. Fresulone memo (last paragraph, p. 1):

'If you wish to deduct the overestimated amount...please bear in mind however, that this deduction will be added to your fourth quarter bill. This is necessary because...the fourth quarter bill is based on amounts already billed (NOT was was paid). In summary, the third quarter over billing will be deducted from your fourth quarter bill, whether you pay it or not. Unless any amount that you deduct from your third quarter bill is added back in the fourth quarter, you would received a double deduction.'

Before I call the tax office for clarification, does anyone understand what he is saying? Is there an option that is most economical for me?

I think this memo is obnoxiously complex.

Thanks for any insight.
- las

Just spoke with Peter Fresulone, CFO/tax collector. Although there was an overestimate, there was no over charge. Bottom line: pay the overestimate August 1 or November 1, but you will pay. I don't get it. I don't get it at all.

It sounds like the verbal explanation was not quite as clear as it should have been.

As I read the memo, the correction (reduction for the overestimate) will be made to your 4th quarter bill, whether or not you elect to overpay (i.e. pay the billed amount) in the 3rd quarter. Therefore if you deduct the overage from your 3rd quarter payment, you will have to add back that same amount in the 4th quarter because the amount billed will have been reduced, irrespective of the amount you paid in the 3rd quarter.

My own take - Unless there is a compelling reason to do otherwise, you are probably better off just paying the billed amounts. The headaches that are likely to ensue otherwise are just not worth the small amount of savings from delaying the payment. (Especially in these days of miniscule interest rates!)

I don't keep an overpayment of $300 on my credit card, and I don't plan on doing the same with Maplewood. They can come after me later when I actually owe it.

cjc, in one way I agree with you sort a on general principals.

However, this is money that we already owe. The third and quarter tax bills are playing catch up with reality.

My concern is that the fun folks in the escrow departments of the banks are going to recalculate escrow and come looking for a $1,200 check to get ahead of the curve. :-(

cjc,

Just keep in mind that if you wait for the Township to come after you for the taxes due, thay will be looking for late payment interest at, I think, 9% per annum.

I don't believe so. As the letter said (or tried to say), homes were over-taxed and they gave examples of two assessments and the overcharge. I then subtracted my corresponding overcharge, noted same on the voucher accompanying payment, and sent it in.

If I'm assessed interest on $300+ due to the guidance they provided me, I'll raise as much hell as I can and as directly as possible.

cjc - They have already said that the overage will be deducted from your 4th quarter bill. If (as is allowed) you elect to take personal initiative to deduct it from your 3rd quarter then you must also take personal initiative to add it back in to the 4th quarter bill. If you fail to do so, then they certainly will come after you with the late payment interest added on.

To whomever it may apply - Can I assume that all of you who are railing about this have NEVER made a mistake at your workplaces????
