We're relatively new here, and bought a house on a corner lot. Mr. Mittlemeier (sp?) told us we could not erect a fence around the front or side. Yet since we moved here, I've seen three fences put up on the front or sides of corner lots -- Harvard and Valley, Prospect and Park, and Prospect and near Oakland. So, can I/how do I legally put up a fence around the front/side to protect my kids and pets?
Thanks.

Welcome to Maplewood Peter. You will have to either go before the Board of Adjustment or settle for a 2 ft. high fence around the front side of your property. If you speak to Mr. Mittermaier he'll give you the forms to fill out.

Good luck...

I think the rule is that you can't have a fence in front of the building line. With corner houses it is sometimes difficult to determine just where the building line is. Your best bet is to check with the building department as Art suggests and ask them where you can legally place a fence on your property.

Hedging is another way to go. Last time I looked there was no law against planting shrubs on one's property.

I also have a corner house. Some of the fences you see were grandfathered in and therefore are legal. Others are illegal. Some may have gotten variances.

Originally side and front yards for corner houses were both treated as front yards and fencing was not allowed. However, I believe that rules were changed x number of years ago to allow side yards to be fenced.

I'd call Bob.M again. I think if side fence is x number of feet from curb and is landscaped, it may be possible.

People do fence parts of yards and use electric fencing for dogs.

Privateline me if you like to discuss this further.
