The curb in front of my house is crumbling, I contacted a couple of contractors to get a # on replacing it. The cost is about $3000.00 . This is very high , both explained to me that while the curb is Mwoods responsiability , if I wanted it replaced, Mwoods code stipulates that the curb be excavated 18" below the street line. If one takes a look around Mwood ,a lot of curbing is in disrepair . This is not standard operating procedure , all I really want to do is remove the bad curbing down to the street line & put up stacked cobble stone . I don't think the town is going to replace their curb , but if they would change the code to say Millburns it would help keep Mwood beautiful. |

jet, looking around on the maplewood township website, I remember seeing an ordinance regarding curbs in Mplwd. There are areas where some kind of cobble is required, other areas require a concrete curb. It's not your choice what you want your curb to look like. Browse the Township website or call the building department for details. |

Earl thanks for the reply . It's not about whether or not I want to use cobblestone or concrete , it's the 18" excavation that makes it so expensive. This is the only town around that requirers this depth of excavation to improve the curb. |

I have a question, who is responsible for the curb replacement when your curb is disappearing, due to additional layers of asphalt that is applied by the town. My curb has 3 inches left, while my neighbor is down to 1". I have a water runoff outlet in my curb (from the house) that is now 90% below the street level. xx years ago that run off was above street level. I know removing the old asphalt from the street, prior to applying a new layer, is more expensive that just adding a layer, but you would think that the town would assist (neg a lower rate with a contractor) to help home owners replace their curbs due to this practice. I see that most of South Orange’s curbs were replaced with Belgian block (Who paid for that). Some towns have concrete aprons at the curb that basically set the max height of the street, preventing height creep in the following years. |

Sounds like the Maplewood Township Committee needs to revisit their expensive curb replacement policy which seems woefully out of date. And they need to revisit it, NOW! Jet has identified a relevant issue which has been in plain sight, but ignored by this and previous township committees. This is a great issue which will help the town infrastructure, neighborhoods, safety, and lower budget needs. A win/win for all of us. Unlike the confrontational nature of almost all issues here. It starts with citizens raising and pursuing this issue during new business at town hall. Do not let this crew like those of the Davenport/Jerry era appoint a committee to review this or it will disappear into the current committee hole of non accountability. Talk is cheap....Action and results are needed. (By the way for all you newbies--between 10 and 15 years ago, a number of streets curbs and sidewalks, plus driveway aprons across Springfield were done, but not out of our budget. Some grants were in play. Given our tax situation, due to schools et al, we should look into other funding methods) |

I'd sure like to HAVE a curb? Can I request the township to put one in? My neighbors have curbstones, and they don't match, so I thought that it's the owners' choices to have or not have. |
