This is a letter I just sent:

quote:

Thomas L Reingold

Maplewood, NJ 07040

September 10, 2004

Maplewood Violations Bureau
125 Dunnell Rd
Maplewood, NJ 07040

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am enclosing my fine for my parking violation, ticket 119582.

I request that you improve your tickets. My ticket is illegible because it required too much pen pressure. Furthermore, there is no mention of what the fine amount is, because there is no place for the officer to note it. I called your office and learned that you expect me to call in order to learn the fine. I would prefer it if I could tell the fine just from reading the ticket. I feel that if you made these two recommended changes, it would be an improvement for all people who receive tickets, as well as for your office, so that you can spend less time on the phone.

Sincerely,

Thomas L Reingold

Do you know you can pay for the ticket online? It's really convenient. I think the website information was on the ticket I got a while back.

I noticed that, and I would have used that, except that I wanted to send a letter. I thought the letter might have more effect if it arrived with the check.

Besides the parking infraction, what was the other charge Tom, if I may ask?

Oh, I see I worded my letter badly. I want them to 1. change the ticket so it doesn't rely so much on heavy pen pressure, i.e. so I can read it and 2. leave a space for the officer to put the fine in. Would you believe there is no such space?

Does the town have someone in charge of forms design and control? If not, maybe one or more of us who have this kind of background could volunteer to review the town's forms and make suggestions.

Many years ago, back in the days of typewriters, I was in charge of forms design for a municipal agency. I would be glad to make some suggestions re: content and format but I have no knowledge of paper stock or carbon interleaf issues.

Time Out!
Tom R if you can't read the ticket, can't determine the offense ect, the ticket should be thrown out when challenged in court, as being invalid.
If this town can't perform basic duties such as issuing tickets correctly, it needs new leadership and new appointed officials who will bring professionalism back.

Forget well intentionned citizens helping out on a volunteer basis, an ineffective municipal department.

... I wouldn't go so far as to say we need new leadership and new appointed officials who will bring professionalism back.

However, it would be a beneficial to bring the issue before the TC for their consideration. This is where citizens can help out on a volunteer basis, and be a part of creating a more effective municipal government.

So Joan why don't you draft a new form and have Reflective present it to the TC. Tom, you follow up and make sure it gets done the way you want it! Meanwhile I have more important things to do like getting ready for my premiere on Tuesday...

Reflective, I don't think the illegibility makes it invalid. Think about how, in other cases, we are responsible to know what the law is and abide by it. Not knowing the law is not an excuse. They treated this fact interestingly in The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy.

Tom, you're correct to an extent, but you have the right to know what you're being charged with. I don't know if that's the case with your ticket, but, if it is, challenge it.

I parked the car illegally knowingly. I'm not disputing the charge. I had a conference with the assistant principal at CHS, and I parked on Kensington. I expected it to run until after 9am, so I knew I was taking a chance. Next time, I'll walk to the school and be late for a meeting, if I have to, to avoid the ticket. I had parked there a couple of times before without getting a ticket, but I don't think I will any more. No hard feelings about it.

Tom, I completely agree with your post. My wife got a parking ticket today. The Parking Offense that the officer wrote does not even come close to matching any of the offenses listed on the back. The Ordinance/Code No. also does not resemble anything listed on the back of the ticket. I have no idea how much we should pay.

I always thought that the form of traffic tickets is uniform throughout the State, and that Maplewood doesn't design its own forms. But perhaps Tom will get a reply to his letter and will be able to enlighten us.
