I think I rememebr seeing a sign at the site that gave Nov. 12, 2004, as the completion date.

You could always call:

the guy at the Exxon station told me yesterday 7-10 days. I wonder if they will put the sign back up next to the bridge indicating that it is the Revolutionary War site of the Battle of Springfield.

Why was the battle of Springfield fought in Millburn? Was it because the Bridge was closed?

The Brits advanced towards Springfield using a bridge at this location and then marched towards Springfield via what is now Millburn Avenue. I believe there was a small skirmish at the bridge, but I may be wrong as this is from memory.

The area along what is now Ridgewood Rd., then called Grub Street, was evacuated since the British line of advance wasn't known. It is alleged that George Washington stayed at the Ball House, the Ball familiy being cousins of his wife Martha.

I was always intrigued by that battle sign. Would adore knowing more about it.

Thanks for mentioning it, Hank. Nice giggle, Anon.

Here's a link to a prior discussion. Please privateline me (make sure to clear the checkbox to include your real email address) if you'd like me to email you a copy of my map of the battle.

Phil

(And the real answer as to the location of the battle: Because "Springfield" then included what is now Maplewood, Millburn and Vauxhall)

The bridge road seems to be clearing and ready to go soon, if I may dare say so.

7:42 AM Saturday morning..heading to the Exxon station for gas and I saw the roadway was open so I put off filling up for a couple of minutes and drove over the new bridge. Smooth and happy to say...a NEW historical commemorative sign is up for the Battle of Springfield.

Actually, as I noted above, I recall seeing a sign that gave Nov. 12 as the completion date. So, if my memory is correct, this project was finished nearly THREE WEEKS ahead of schedule.
