"By a vote of 4-1, the committee agreed to build a new station on a property currently occupied by two businesses. The township plans to enter negotiations to acquire those buildings..." Not so fast Taylor. There's still work to be done. This vote was still only steps toward the means to the end. Keep your fingers crossed... |

Ajc, How about throwing a little positive energy toward this effort? The first thing out of your mouth is, "Not so fast". Sheesh.

I agree with AJC on this one- The Mormon Church forced its way onto Springfield Ave with the real threat of litigation forever. Let's be a bit prudent and see what comes of Federico's real deal with the Church. It is a great ideal-but a long way from reality and breaking ground.

I would take a middle of the road view on this one. The initial decision to locate the police station on a specific site has been made. The owners of the two developed properties needed for this project seem to be on board -- at least we haven't heard the collective outcry raised by persons opposed to the most recent prior proposal. However, the two developed lots together are not large enough for what the TC tells us is necessary to build a police station which would house all of the needed operations. Since the building which houses the Bette White Dance Studio and other businesses and residences is firmly off the table, this plan can only go forward if the Mormon Church agrees to sell some of its property to the Town. One would hope that there have already been negotiations to ensure the liklihood of the Town's successfully acquiring this property prior to the 4-1 vote approving the latest police station site. Thus, we are much closer than we were last year at this time but it still isn't a done deal. |

Joan: Your "hope" is not in vain. There were considerable negotiations with the Church's representative before I announced the proposal. In fact, I entered into a "Memorandum of Understanding" with the Church that sets forth the parameters of a deal. But you are right - there is no deal until the final contract is signed. |

"...this plan can only go forward if the Mormon Church agrees to sell some of its property to the Town." Joan, I guess you missed the TC meeting when this proposal was first introduced. A representative of the Church of LDS came forward to speak in favor of the deal. IMHO, I believe the Church is probably thrilled with the idea. I mean having the town invest over $10 million dollars right next to you, and building probably one of the most visible public buildings in town, has to fit right into what they do best... advertise and promote their faith. The more I think about it, the better I like it. It's a "Perfect Solution" to complement everything that's been done thus far along the Avenue to represent Maplewood to America in the most favorable light possible. For too long, families living off the Avenue only think of Maplewood as this cute, quaint little shopping Village surrounded by beautiful homes and well groomed properties, lots good restaurants, a Pub, Café’s, and even an historic old B&B that greets and welcomes visitor’s to our community... Therefore, as many knowledgeable people have said in the past, “How goes Springfield Avenue, so goes Maplewood.” Let’s all try to support this initiative and the four members of the TC in favor of it. It’s a plan whose time has finally come! |

Thanks, Art. I realize it's not a done deal yet, but it is a positive plan and does seem likely to go forward.

Fred: Thanks so much for the update. I seem to remember reading that the Church in Salt Lake City would have to approve any final deal since the local Church officials don't have the authority to make the decision to sell the land on their own. Is this correct? If so, what stage are the negotiations at? |

What stage you ask? The TC authorized the town atttorney to begin the negotiatons at the last meeting. Come on, relax already Joan, give them a little more time... In case you haven't noticed lately, we're in very capable hands. |

Fred Profeta ROCKS! The rest of TC is a log jam. Abolish the TC. One good mayor is all we need, just ask Rudy. |
