Who is Ruby Bridges?
What is the o with the two dots on top?

The "o with the two dots" is a false umlaut caused when text is copy/pasted from MS Word into the message board's text box.

Here's a site about Ruby Bridges:
http://www.rubybridges.net/

(She was one of the first black students to be escorted by federal marshalls to an all white school after desegregation laws were passed. Today she runs the eponymously named foundation.)

You don't get a "false umlaut" if you cut-and-paste out of WordPerfect.

Of course, the Evil Empire has made sure that WordPerfect's days are numbered.

Ms. Bridges' tribulations were immortalized by Norman Rockwell in his painting:

Thanks for the education about Ms. Bridges over troubled waters but what is an umlaut"?

An umlaut (usually, or perhaps always, over a "u") is the two dots you asked about. (Don't pronounce the T at the end of umlaut. Just hint at it.) It changes the pronunciation of the u to a sound often heard in French, as in "tu." I don't know if it has any impact on meaning but I doubt it. You find it used in German (and possibly other Teutonic languages) and inadvertently in MS Word.

The 't' is silent? I don't think so -- the word is German, not French. :)

Yes, it should be pronounced the way Schultz on Hogan's Heroes would say it.

"Inadvertently in MS word" - what does that mean?

This is controlled by an option in Microsoft Word. I believe the key here is the Tools-AutoCorrect dialog box, specifically the "AutoFormat as you type" page. There is a "Hyphens with dash" or something similar option.

This is a - normal hyphen

This is a normal double -- hyphen

This (I think) is an autoformatted ö hyphen

This is an autoformatted double ö hyphen

Do you know how to convert from a document that has been autoformatted to one that is not?

I would select the autoformatted hyphens and do a search and replace to normal ones. You can probably record a macro to do this easily if you have a bunch of documents.
