A couple of times over the last week or so we have noticed the air raid sirens going off. What is the story? We live above Ridgewood towards Millburn. When we first moved here they were tested once a month at noon on Saturdays. This died out, but now seems to be coming back. Is this a Homeland Security thing? |

years ago a siren use to go off before they'd blast in the quarry. i think i read on the board, blasting was resuming. maybe that's what the sirens are from? |

The siren has been going off at seemingly random times at day and night. It just went off twice - about 15 minutes apart. We called the fire station and police and no-one seems to know what is going on except the police thought that it was a malfunction. I'd love to know who is responsible for the thing. It's pretty disconcerting. Does anyone know if it means anything other than school closing?

as far as i know they still have a whistle for calling the fire personal to the station. but that's more a fog horn sound then siren. has anyone checked with the builders in the quarry? i'm willing to bet that's where it's coming from. |

Just, we are a long, long way from the quarry. The siren is located, I am pretty sure, on Ridgewood Rd. There is another one directly in front of our house, but that one doesn't go off. |

Bob I heard it last week, mid week, late morning. I was near the Maplewood train station, and the sound seemed to come from somewhere southwest of where I was standing. I too was wondering what it was -- have to admit that a little "duck and cover" went through my brain. Barbara |

It just happened again. One was on Clinton and then a second chimed in, like two part harmony, a couple of blocks further north.

Why don't you call town hall? Someone there may know why the siren is going off. |

The construction people at South Orange Train Station use a fog horn squeely thing in the mornings. I hear it every morning while I wait for the train. It is loud enough to tell the guys w/ jackhammers to get off the tracks as a train is coming. They sometimes use it a few times between the time I get there and the time my train comes (7:35) and sometimes they don't use it at all - seems to depend on whether or not someoen is using a jackhammer. |

In case the soviets are finally coming to bomb the Maplehood... refer to these air raid instructions from a 1960's Columbia High School student handbook...

THE HORN IN QUESTION IS NOT A "SQUEELY THING". Nor is it a siren. Its the same horn they sound on a snow day. The one that's in my craw is on the corner of Ridgewood Rd and Ridgewood Terr.. Make it stop...please. It went off at 7:30pm..15 minutes after the baby fell asleep. Give me a break! |
