The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Maplewood Township Committee will be on Wednesday, November 7 (moved so as to not conflict with election day). The meeting will be at 8PM in Town Hall, and will be broadcast live on Channel 35.

Post questions as a followup to this posting and I will try and get them answered.

Okay, I'll bite. What's the Ridgewood Avenue commercial area named now?

Is the "leaf blower ordinance" a proposed new one or a current one? Either way, is it possible to see a copy of what will be under discussion?

Thanks,
Kathleen

On Ridgewood Ave. - We have been asked to consider naming the commercial area the Washington Park Commons or something similar. We and they think this will help with marketing and promotion.

On the leaf blower - This is just a discussion items and one that will take a lot of discussion before we move ahead. We have looked at the Montaclair ordinance as a model to pick and choose from.

Kathleen - I also want to thank you for your comments about the deer. We may end up disagreeing in the end but there will be more time for you and others to give your views.

Thanks, Vic. I've been reading more about deer issues, and I'm going to take your comment as encouragement to keep sharing with you and the TC what I'm learning. I hope we will all end up agreeing based on the facts.

I think I can find the Montclair ordinance online. I plan to follow those discussions closely, too, and dearly hope I don't go deaf before you reach some decision about these eardrum-busters. I consider the quiet of Maplewood to be as much a part of the historic character of the town as its architecture and its trees, and just as deserving of "preservation" status and protection in the face of cultural shifts that threaten to destroy it.

Not my fault. I was caught off guard, by what Jerry called it. Besides, maybe there is a Ridgewood Avenue in Mapewood (that's what the title of this thread calls the town, at least until someone fixes it). (Don't you dare fix it.)

And, as Ed May would say, "Why do we have a corner of Ridgewood (Rd.) and Ridgewood (Ter.)"?

QUESTION

What time will the Township Committee Meeting be over? Can anyone predict that by looking at the agenda? Is there a cut off time?

The reason I ask is that I am the featured speaker tonight at the Newcomers Club Meeting which starts at 7:45 PM at Morrow Memorial and presumably won't be over until sometime after 9PM.

If I get to the TC meeting at, say 9:30 PM or 10 PM, will the meeting be over?

I heard they sometimes run pretty late, but I also heard that an effort is being made to end the meetings at a "reasonable" hour.

I have not been to a TC meeting in years (if ever?) but have seen them on TV.

I thought it might be fun, now that the election is over, to see what really happens at the TC meeting.

What can anybody tell me about this?

I guess I will answer my own question.
Got to TC mtg at 10:15 PM - it was still going.
Turned on Ch 35 after 11 - it was still going.
Ended before midnite.
Does it replay on Ch 35?

Mr. Ryan or Mr. DeLuca,

Can you please give me the overview regarding the proposed ordinance on leaf blowers that was postponed until next meeting?

Thank you.

Mr. Sager: it's not as far along as that. I was approached by a citizen's group that would like the TC to consider enacting additional regulations on leaf blowers, or to perhaps consider banning them entirely. I'd reported on this at the second meeting in October, and the discussion item was a placeholder in case there was any new information to report. There wasn't... and there is, at the moment, still no proposed ordinance, nor anything more "official" than the notion that somer folks would like us to consider changing the existing ordinance. We're pretty far from even deciding if we want to draft an ordinance to discuss, much less introduce.

Hope that helps,
Jerry Ryan

Mr. Ryan (do you prefer Jerry?),

Thank you for responding so soon to my question. Can you please tell me if any regulations exist currently regarding leaf blowers?

My reason for asking is that I own one, and I use it to clean around my home (the exterior only!) I also take the time out to care for my neighbor's property, as they are beyond their years in doing yardwork. In addition, I also let some of the neighbors down the street use it to do their lawns. I want to make sure that we're using it according to the whatever regulations we have here, since I was not aware there were any.

In the mean time, I'll just beg of you not to impose any regulations or an ordinance against them. Please!

Thank you again for your response.

Best regards,

Darren Sager

Jerry's fine... do you prefer Darren? :-)

There are regs but they are the usual noise regs (time restrictions... don't have them at hand but they regulate usage to daytime hours and don't allow it early on weekends; i'll look 'em up and post 'em).

I don't know if it has changed in the last couple of years, but I wrote up the Maplewood noise ordinance and posted it here.

Jerry,

Mr. Sager is what my mother called me growing up when I did something wrong. So yes, I prefer Darren. :)

I appreciate both yours and Larry's help on the matter. I do seem to be using it according to the noise ordinance. I'll make sure none of my neighbors borrow it before 7:00 a.m. or after 11 p.m.

Sorry to ask another question, as I understand you're a busy person. Does the noise ordinance cover garbage collection? The garbage truck likes to pull in front of my home at 5:00 a.m. (or behind my home at 3:00 a.m.), and rev the engine while they are picking up the trash. It's quite annoying being woken up every Wednesday and Saturday morning. Please let me know.

Thank you again for your help with the leaf blower.

Best regards,

Darren

Darren: garbage is different. The regulations on garbage pickup are established by the BPU and there had been little or no restriction on operating hours for trash pickup. I say "had been" because there's recent changes in these regs that the TC has asked the administrator and legal dept to investigate, and it may be the case that we can regulate those annoying 5AM pickups...

I'm new to town.
Can anyone tell me when the bulk trash pick-up for Parker Ave @ Suffolk will be?
Will cardboard boxes and plastic bags filled with clean newsprint (packing) be taken?
What about paint cans?, Old carpet?

THanks.

Andrew

You should call DPW to get the date of the pick-up. Cardboard boxes and newsprint are recycled either at the curb on your designated day or at the DPW recycling yard.

Paint cans that contain water based paint can be thrown away in the normal garbage. If they contain oil based paint the town does not take them. You can dispose of the cans when Essex County has a hazardous waste clean-up day. An old carpet can be put our for bulk pick-up

Welcome to town.
