Stephen C. Kaufmann, honored captain in Maplewood police department, 68 Wednesday, November 24, 2004 A service for Stephen C. Kaufmann, 68, of Monroe Township will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Union Funeral Home-Lytwyn & Lytwyn, 1600 Stuyvesant Ave., Union. Mr. Kaufmann died Monday at home. He was a captain in the Maplewood Police Department, where he was a member for 28 years before retiring in 1994. He was the first Maplewood police officer to receive the Maple Leaf Award for outstanding community service. Mr. Kaufmann was a founding member and first president of the Maplewood First Aid Squad and an emergency medical technician instructor/trainer with the Traffic Officers Association of Essex County. Mr. Kaufmann graduated from the FBI Academy, Quantico, Va. He served in the Navy from 1954 to 1958 and was attached to the Marine Corps Medical Corps. He was a member of the Police Benevolent Association and the Fraternal Order of Police in Maplewood as well as the FBI Association and the International Police Association Region 10. Born in Newark, Mr. Kaufmann lived in Maplewood for most of his life before moving to Monroe Township. Surviving are Dina, his wife of 44 years; daughters, Dina Aster and Linda Marucci; a brother, William, and four grandchildren.
