Puleeze - I can't believe I heard right over the cable last night. (Incidentally, the TC could be heard, still harder to hear speakers, altho much improved over the last meeting) Architects are lining up to get a chance to comment on the expert PDH Architect hired? I see competitive jealousy nipping at the plans. Just what the TC needs. One does get the impression that not all of the members really understands what is going to be built anyway. It made me think about the old definition: A camel is a horse designed by a committee. |

Too many architects spoil the plan? Why should the citizens of Maplewood be second guessing a professional who was hired to do what is a relatively simple job? I can understand the police department staff and the town engineer paricipating in determining the final aspects of the plan, but not every concerned person in town. That is not the way to get this building built. |

I agree with you Joan. We need to keep this thing on track. However, did you see the sketches of the proposed police station during the public meetings regarding the location? At that time Many people commented on the appearance of the building and I believe we are using the same architect. I really hope he has adjusted those original plans. In my opinion the drawings were for an exceedingly ugly building that doesn't work with our small-town image. It almost looked like a prison with guard towers on either side of the entrance. Modern would be okay, but in good taste please. |

My understanding is that this architect knows what police stations need -- from the inside. He doesn't have a clear understanding or sensitivity to what might make a design especially well-suited to Maplewood or Springfield Avenue. Great care is being taken with the beautification of Springfield Avenue and the last thing we need is some kind of modern building that doesn't make an effort to blend in with aesthetic and the scale and building periods of the street and the town. I think we are extremely fortunate to have such an extraordinarily talented group of individuals volunteer to help advise the design. Everyone seemed pleased to have this expertise, and it costs the Township nothing. I thank them for volunteering their services. I am confident that the design can only improve. This building will be around for a long time so it is worth getting right.

"...we are extremely fortunate to have such an extraordinarily talented group of individuals volunteer to help advise the design." Right on... after all the input, and the time and money looking for the final resting place for the new police department, what's the harm in a little more community input? |
