The December 18th Township Committee meeting will be the last official meeting for Ellen Davenport as a Committeewoman. Her term ends at the end of this year. Ellen, the first female mayor of Maplewood, has served the community well for the past twelve years and we appreciate all that she has done for so many. It is now time for us to acknowledge the many contributions she has made. On Tuesday, December 18th at 8pm at town hall, please join the Maplewood Township Committee in thanking Ellen Davenport. We welcome your comments and stories about Ellen and the work she has done. Here is your opportunity to toast or roast her. We'll see you there. Sincerely, Vic De Luca Mayor |

I will not have the opportunity to attend the Township Committee meeting next Tuesday so if it is all right with Dave, King of All, I'd like to post my favorite recollections of Ellen Davenport right here. The year was 1995. I had come to Maplewood as part of photo shoot for Yonah Schimmel's knishes. As you all know, Jonah had just come out with the kashe blueberry supreme. While the pictures were being taken of my hands lovingly cradling El Supremo, I heard a loud "Yoohoo" from behind me. I yelled "Yonah, not Yoohoo". Giggling. I turned around and there she was: Ellen. "The Big E" as I came to know her. She asked if she could taste the knish and I said of course, I would be honored. We conversed a bit and I learned that the Big E was practically running the whole town! Over the years, The Big E gave me lots of pointers on a variety of subjects: gardening, wreaths, roberts rules of order, bagels and, believe it or not, a killer recipe for venison burgers. Back in the big Apple, thorughout the late nineties I held many dinner parties and very often my guests would call me to ensure that I was going to have a few of the burgers available for general consumption. I am ashamed to admit that I never gave her the proper credit that she deserved. When my wife and I decided to look for a place to rear the little one, we decided that Maplewood was a heck of a choice. The rest is history: we moved here, I opened many superb establishments in town, and the Yumsters are now the food du jour for another Mayor. What goes around comes around. |
